Angura

Name:Angura
Address:196 2nd Avenue, New York City, NY
Phone:(212) 674-7060
Fax:(212) 674-7060
Opened:Daily: 6.30pm - 2am
Review:"Open since April 2004 Angura is the East Village's newest, underground, late-night Sushi & Sake hot spot and perhaps the only place in New York City where you can relax in a Barka Lounger and enjoy the finest sushi this side of the Tokyo fish market. Angura’s talented Sushi and Kitchen chefs are winning customers over with their masterful creations such as the Deep Sea Roll (Spicy Tuna on the inside topped with regular Tuna and the Chef’s special sauce) and from the kitchen, the heavenly, Baked Lobster Dynamite (a casserole-style dish consisting of lobster, shrimp, crab, scallops, mushrooms and onions over a bed of rice topped with a cream sauce and baked to perfection). Both the kitchen and sushi bar staff are on call until the wee hours to compliment the wonderful, eclectic selection of Sake available. The decor is lush and clandestine reminiscent of an old-style Japanese 'speakeasy'. The vibe is comfortable with an ever-present buzz fueled by the funky sounds of the Japanese Underground. Finally, New Yorkers have a 'chill' authentic sushi joint without the stiff, pretentious atmosphere that usually accompanies these eateries. Angura is a sub-level space open seven days a week located off Second Avenue between 12th and 13th streets. "

Opened:Mon-Thur: 5pm-2am, Fri-Sat: 5pm-3am, Sun:4pm-1am
Reviews:"This place has the best sushi I have ever had! The atmosphere of this place is very casual, and it has more of a ´bar´ feeling to it than a traditional Japanese restaurant feeling. If anything, it is nothing BUT traditional. It´s a great place and a lot of fun just to hang out at. They play loud popular music, and the walls are painted black... They have a great ´Early Bird Special´ that consists of soup, salad, appetizer, entree (choice of sushi, sashimi, tempura, various noodles) and ice cream, all for only $13.95 !"
- Stacie Calabrese (stacie628@msn.com) [July 6th 1997]
"I have no clue what I was thinking when I typed up this review the first time. 'If anything, it is nothing but traditional'? That makes no sense. Ahem: it is not traditional. "

Blue Ribbon Sushi

Name:Blue Ribbon Sushi
Address:119 Sullivan St., New York City, NY 10012
Phone:(212 ) 343-0404
Opened:Tue - Sun: 4pm - 2am, Closed Monday
Reviews:"It is a very unique place with incredible sushi, great service and great atmosphere. Try it!"
- nuritk@inter.net.il
"A few steps downstairs lead to this always crowded, ´no reservations taken´ Japanese restaurant. Be prepared for up to one hour waiting. Behind a tiny bar several sushi chefs prepare fine fish of all kind. For a start try ´Hamachi Tataki´ (yellowtail tartare with a quail egg) or ´Ebi Shumai´ (homemade shrimp dumplings). More than 2o appetizers are a good start for a dinner (´Yamakake´: grated mountain yam with tuna, ´Tako Sumiso´: house cured octopus sashimi, ´Una Kyu´: eel and cucumber) to name a few. Salads include ´Hamachi Mayashi Kyuri´ (yellowtail, beansprout and cucumber).Soups include plain ´Miso´, ´Kaibashira Wakame´ (scallop with seaweed) or ´Unagi Shiitake´ (eel and black mushroom).A few mushimono (steamed dishes) like ´Tai - Red Snapper with plum wine´, ´Yasai - vegetables with ginger´ or ´Hamachi with eel sauce´ are also available. But the main treat is sushi. ´Hamachi´ (yellowtail) and ´Sake´ (salmon) are excellent as well as ´Soft shell crab rolls´, ´Spicy crab lobster roll´, ´Inside Out´ variations of all kind. They offer sushi and sashimi a la carte from $1.75 for ´Tamago´ (sweet egg) to $3.75 for ´Toro´ (fatty tuna). You can even have ´Gyu´ (filet mignon) or ´Hitsuji´ (lamb) as sushi or sashimi. Rolls start at $3.75 for a ´California roll´ to $13.75 for a ´Niji Seven Color Rainbow´ roll, which is enormous. Blue ribbon is a nice place to go and certainly one of the finest in New York City."
- THE SUSHI WORLD GUIDE CREW [July 4th 1998]
"This place is highly over-rated. Besides their mediocre presentation and un-inspiring sushi, their service has hit rock bottom. In a city as grand as New York, Blue Ribbon Sushi has offered very little to support the service and diginity that comes with fine Japanese dining. In fact, it has given it a black eye. Having dined at many fine sushi restaurants, I recommend trying somwhere different in NYC than Blue Ribbon for fine and creative sushi. "

Fujiyama Mama

Review:" ZAGAT gives this restaurant a great review every year and for good reasons. The sushi is high quality and reasonably priced and the rest of the menu is a great mix of very well done modern Japanese-Asian favorite dishes and recipes. Fujiyama Mama easily ranks as one of the funnest sushi restaurant in New York City. A live DJ spins all manner of dinner music, from 80's new wave to ultra-modern Japanese techno. People who are prone to asking for the music to be turned down should stay away, but people who don't want everyone else in the restaurant to hear what they're talking about will love it. This is also a terrific restaurant for a celebration, especially a birthday. The whole restaurant, including the DJ, gets involved. FM has been a hit since it opened in 1986 but some of the kitchen team have been working from that location for over a decade. FM's biggest fans are from the neighborhood; their delivery business has never stopped growing. It's so popular, the ownership is considering opening another one! The only drawback -- they're only open for dinner. "

"The place looks nice but you have to get past the overwhelming attitude... They´re not doing you a favor to let you eat there. If you want to eat here for the experience of the conveyor belt, try dinner and avoid the lunch crowds. Just don´t expect the customer-friendly service common to most Japanese restaurants."

Honmura An CLOSED !

Name:Honmura An Soba Cuisine
Address:170 Mercer St. (bet. Prince & W.Houston), New York, NY 10012
Phone:(212) 334-5253
Opened:Tue-Thu: noon - 2.30pm, 6pm - 10pm, Fri-Sat: noon - 2.30pm, 6pm - 10.30pm, Sun 6pm - 9.30pm, Closed Mondays
Review:"Honmura An is a Soba restaurant. The restaurant states that their Soba is all handmade on the premises by masters from their Tokyo restaurant using the highest quality freshly stone ground buckwheat flour. Soba is rich in vitamins and meritorious in reducing the cholesterol count in the blood. Freshly made Soba must be eaten quickly in order for Soba´s subtle flavor and texture to be fully appreciated (Quote from the chopsticks cover). Honmura An has a beautiful location like a huge loft. Very stylish but still cozy. They offer small tasting plates like ´Sansai Ni´ (marinated wild greens), ´Momiji Tataki´ (Carpaccio-style Japanese rare beef) or ´Prawn tempura´. Their giant prawns are specially shipped from Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. They are enormous, succulent and sweet. Finally they serve noodles: Hot and Cold Soba as well as Udon. Cold Soba includes ´Kamo Seiro´ (Seiro Soba with a hot, duck based, dipping sauce), ´Nameko Oroshi´ (Daikon radish, scallion and button mushrooms) or ´Ten Seiro´ (Seiro Soba with giant prawn tempura). Hot Soba includes ´Okame´ (topped with seafood, vegetables and fillet of chicken in a rosy cheek figure), ´Kamonan´ (topped with sliced duck and scallions in a duck based soup) or ´Tempura Soba´ (with two giant prawn tempura). Udon includes ´Goma Dare Udon´ (Plain cold udon noodle with sesmae based dipping sauce) or ´Nabeyaki Udon´ (Sizzlinghot Udon in a clay dish with prawn tempura and topped with chicken, fish cake and vegetables). Desserts like ´Soba Shiruko´ (small Soba dumplings in sweet redbean soup) or Vanilla Icecream with Ogura (redbean topping). Prices for main dishes vary from $8.50 to $18.75. For lunch they offer a ´prix fixe´ for $18.00."

Reviews:"This flashy new TriBeCa restaurant is the work of LA´s Nobu Matsuhisa. In an awe-inspiring space, the menu is simply miraculous, providing jet-setting trendies with the ultimate designer japanese food."
"Nobu offers Pan-Asian cuisine in a beautiful setting in TriBeca. It is not genuine Japanese food but very tasty. If you get a chance to reserve there (If you want to go for dinner, you have to call at least one or two weeks in advance, for lunch it could be only one or two days waiting. If they accept your reservation they want you to confirm it 24 hours before, otherwise your table is gone!). If you manage to sit there, great ! Besides standard Japanese dishes like tempura, sushi and sashimi (all kinds of excellent fish from $2.75 for white fish to $6.00 for sea eel) they offer special dishes, which make Nobu different. ´Creamy spicy crab´ (lasagne-like entree with crabs), ´Halibut cheeks with wasabi pepper sauce´, ´Chilean Sea Bass with black bean sauce´, just to name a few. Rolls include ´Salmon Skin´, ´Spicy Tuna Roll´, ´The House Roll´ (Thinly sliced cucumber with avocado, crab stick, tuna, tobiko and white fish). Prices for rolls start at $3.80 for a kappamaki (cucumber roll) to $8.00 for a Soft Shell Crab Roll. For desserts they offer beautiful decorated and very tasty mixtures of icecream, mousse and fruits, which any french or italian restaurant could be proud of. Nobu is not straight Japanese cuisine but a mixture of Japanese and nouvelle cuisine."
- THE SUSHI WORLD GUIDE CREW [July 4th 1998]
"Nobu - the most over-rated Japanese restaurant in America. Crowded, noisy, bad service and average food at Ginza Prices. I have probably dined at well over 1,000 Japanese restaurants in Japan and America, and Nobu is certainly the most disappointing I have ever experienced! Their sister restaurant, Matsuhisa, in Aspen, Colorado is wonderful, while Nobu is waste of time and money."

Reviews:"Opened in DEC 2002.I wouldn't have found this place were it not rated so high on Citysearch (I did have my suspicions on how they got so many great reviews) or read their food critic review on a NY Times link. I'm a believer now! Raku is a secret hideaway just steps from the heart of hustle bustle of Times Square/TKTS. I would rate this one of the best little sushi houses in the city - & for the price you don't overpay for excellent quality & variety! The Chef's specialty rolls are so creative & delicious - they have stepped up the enjoyment of sushi but have not stepped over to fusion confusion of flavors. I love the cinco de mayo, lobster tempura, mango ray, marina & super gerard rolls, & their best customer rolls named after morgan stanley & proskauer rolls). They also cater to veggie & mothers-to-be which is great for my circle of friends. Friendly staff & chefs & owner Ray - tho Ray does talk your ear off! But his milky sake & new 'frooter' sakes are quite refreshing! Plenty of non-sushi choices will please a diverse group (but it's not really good for large groups). Reservations recommended but do avoid their pre-theater rush. They seem to be quite harried & rushed, otherwise after the rush service is great, atmosphere is cozy & quaint, & yes Ray is tolerable if you don't mind his inquisitive nature. "

- THE SUSHI WORLD GUIDE CREW [July 4th 1998]
"Two years ago, I was in New York City for a convention. Being the avid sushi lover that I am, I wanted to go to a few sushi bars to see what NYC had to offer. Before going, I read a number of reviews of different restaurants. It was clear that personal taste influenced these reviews. For example, you highly recommend Sushisay. Whereas, another person said Sushisay was 'fishy' and not very good. That same person suggested a place in the Village. Fortunately, I got to go to both and I must say that I whole heartedly agree with you. Sushisay was fantastic!!! (That place in the Village was so-so). The best sushi I had ever had (up till then)."
- Michael Knight (mdk@hrb.com) [June 28th 2001]
"I'm sorry to report that Sushisay in NYC closed its doors for good on October 25, 2002. The owner moved back to Japan to run her restaurant there. At least Nobu is still open. I haven't been to it yet, but I have been to Matsuhisa in Los Angeles and it was FANTASTIC!!!!! So I suspect Nobu might take Sushisay's place on your list of favorites. "

- Kris Campana (kc304@hotmail.com) [April 10th 1999]
"Ok - we waited over 1.5 hours to get into this rather dingy looking place and were prepared to kill customers who seemed to be lingering over their last nigiri too long. But to draw on the cliche - it was worth the wait. Other than Hamano in San Francisco, I have never tasted sushi this fresh. The fish was succulent - especially the hamachi belly and maguro. Saba was also excellent, as was the ikura, and the uni was probably the freshest I've ever had. Portions are extremely large (slabs of fish, in fact, they could be a bit smaller and then you'd just get more pieces.) Order sashimi since the fish is so heavenly. The price is reasonable. This is the place for sushi connoiseurs. My cousin also had the standard rolls (california etc.) and said they were incredible. We observed a moment of silence to honor the fish. Better than NYC's other greats (Japonica, Yama, etc.), although I've never been to Sushisay. Next time, if I can pull myself away from Tomoe."

Review:" Opened in late 2000. Same ownership as Jeollado and Sandobe, but the decor is cuter and a lot quieter. Less crowded than Sandobe, more intimate than Jeollado. The sushi is exquisite, but only the special house rolls - the regular rolls (except eel and California) are merely average. Service is intermittent, but who cares when the fish is this good and this cheap! Five star sushi at two star prices. A welcome addition to Hell's Kitchen. "
