Ai Sushi CLOSED !

Name:Ai Sushi CLOSED !
Address:1608 N 45th Street, Seattle, WA 98103
Phone:(206) 632-7044
Review:" We stumbled across Ai when we tried to get into Musashi´s Sushi & Grill just down the street. Nothing against Musashi, but we had a great eating experience at Ai. So much so, we haven't been back to Musashi. It is always crowded and they seem extremely rushed -- to the point of serving sushi when the rice is still warm! On the other hand,we have been back to Ai many times. Great food and great prices. We like the big beers, too. "

Kamon on Lake Union

Name:Kamon on Lake Union
Address:1177 Fairview Avenue North, Seattle, WA
Phone:(206) 622-4665
Opened:Daily: 11am - 2pm, 5pm - 11pm
Review:" If you´ve read the review about the disappointing lunch sushi fare at Nikko, but you´re determined to have sushi for lunch, just head northeast a couple of miles to the southeast corner of Lake Union, where the Kamon has a daily (Mon-Sat 11:30 - 2:00 pm) All-you-can-eat sushi buffet. The sushi is not world-class, but it´s definitely good, and it truly is all you can eat. For $11.95 plus tax (i.e. $13.04) you get a small bowl of quite good miso, ocha, and as many trips to the sushi bar as you can squeeze into the intersection of your stomach and two and a half hours. On a recent visit I had (multiple pieces of each of) mirugai, unagi, saba, hamachi, maguro, tako, ika, mussel (which I don´t know the Japanese for), tamago, and shake nigirizushi, plus Washington roll (smoked salmon/avocado/cucumber), spicy tuna roll, bay shrimp tempura roll, California roll, tekka and kappa maki, and probably a few kinds I´ve forgotten, as well as Chinese-type fried rice and sweet-and-sour chicken, prawns and veggies tempura, fried snapper, cookies, tossed green salad, gyoza and fresh fruit. Some of these latter items are not up to the standard of the sushi (the tempura tends to be a tad soggy, for example, and the fried rice did not impress me at all) &emdash; but why bother with that stuff when there´s unlimited, fairly good sushi? If you want something in the way of sushi that´s not on the buffet menu (e.g. while I was there somebody was trying to get some uni) you may have to wait a while; the sushi chefs have all they can do to keep up with the demand for the standard items, plus you´ll have to pay a bit extra. If ocha isn´t all you want to drink, there´s a full bar (and smoking in the bar for those who choose), and there is a lunch menu for those who don´t like sushi and soggy tempura, but I can´t imagine why anyone would order from it. I´ve never been there except for the buffet, so I can´t report on the dinners, the live music in the bar, or the Sunday brunch. "

Mori

Name:Mori Japanese Restaurant
Address:101 N. 85th Street, Seattle, WA, 98103
Phone:(206) 783-7708
Opened:Mon-Sat: Noon - 3pm, 5pm - 10pm, Sun: 5pm - 10pm
Reviews:" Mori is a little place nestled in the Greenwood area of Seattle. It´s a family-run sushi bar, and doesn´t have the ebony-and-teak look of, say, one of the downtown sushi bars. The lack of snootiness, however, is a real asset; the staff is friendly and attentive, the food is lovely, and the cost reflects the more modest trappings of this understated restaurant. The sushi itself has, in my experience, always been of the highest quality, and the other dishes are equally notable---even as far as the miso soup, which is literally more flavorful than the miso I´ve had at other sushi bars around the city. In all, I highly recommend this place---and gods be praised, they deliver."
- Ken McGlothlen (mcglk@serv.net) [February 27th 1999]
"I do second the favorable review of Mori. It´s very very good. The rainbow roll can be ordered to go and makes a festive touch at a picnic or party."

Musashi´s

Name:Musashi´s Sushi & Grill
Address:1400 N 45th (Wallingford), Seattle
Phone:(206) 633-0212
Review:"I´ve passed Musashi´s hundreds of times but never entered until two weeks ago, because of the crowds. I have never seen the place lightly attended; there is almost always a line to get in. I was seated immediately (at the counter) because I was alone, but if there had been two or three of us the wait would have exceeded half an hour, and there is no waiting area, so you stand on the sidewalk, weather be what it may, until your name is called. But the sushi was very fresh and generous, and the service was prompt and friendly. There is no true sushi bar at Musashi´s; there´s a counter, but you can´t see the ingredients, nor the preparation. The nigiri is sold by the single piece (rather than the customary pair), so if you want (say) one maguro, one tako, one hamachi and one ebi, you can get it that way, and the prices are very reasonable even doubled for comparison. My only disappointment was that the amaebi didn´t come with the deep-fried head which I consider the crown glory of an amaebi experience. I may go back, but only if the weather is good and the line is short. "

"Nikko is in many ways the pinnacle of Japanese food in Seattle"
- Northwest Best Places
"Nikko´s sushi chefs serve world class creatios during the evening. However, their luncheon service is very disappointing. It consists of a pre-made (old, dry) a la carte selection that are brought from the back room. The selection is quite limited and since you really don´t see sushi chefs at work, I seriously wondered about who was making that stuff in the back room. Again: evening meals are a wonderful experience."

Phone:(206) 443-9844
Review:"This is certainly one of the finest Japanese Restaurants on the Westcoast. Reservation is absolutely necessary. The restaurant is quite small with three chefs (Chef Shiro Kashiba used to work at Nikko) preparing sushi behind the sushi counter. The service is attentive and excellent. If you sit at the table, the mainly Japanese waitresses will bring you an orderform for the sushi (sushis are per piece ,not pair). Any sushi you order is of the highest quality (hamachi, maguro, toro, albacore, kingcrab, unagi). Spicytuna roll (filled with carrot and lots of tabasco) or salmon skin roll are delicious. For starters try albacore sashimi which is extremely nice, also smelt tataki is a great entree besides standards like spinach or mozukusu. The presentation of cold sake is sensational. They use wonderful blue vaselike glassflasks, which have a dent at the lower part, where a few icecubes are stored. So the sake is chilled without putting the whole bottle in an icepail. Most of the guests seeem to be regulars and I would if I would live there. Shiro´s is definitely worth the trip to Seattle!!"

Shun

Name:Shun
Address:2510 NE Blakeley St, Seattle, WA 98105
Phone:(206) 522-2200
Review:"Seattle, USA/Washington Restaurant: Phone: Fax: Opened in 2006. Shun (meaning 'fresh/in season' - pronounced more like shoo-n) is a welcome addition to Seattle's Japanese food scene despite its pun-prone name, located just north of U-Village at 25th & Blakeley behind the 76 gas station (across from Roundtable Pizza). It's a nice enough restaurant to take a date to with nice, solid Japanese food, minus all the ego that sometimes seem to accompany some of the Japanese restaurants in Seattle (naming a restaurant after oneself is usually a dead giveaway for those). It has nice enough understated interior - its minimalist and not over-the-top, dark colored wood accents and nice subdued lighting tell you you're not necessarily paying for the expensive antique tansu they bought to be extra cool. It’s still somewhat casual and laid-back. The food has been very fresh and authentic. No gimmicks or tricks here. Good solid sushi (very good toro – they have had o-toro, which is the highest grade of toro, and they can serve it up to you both fresh and flash-broiled for variety in texture) and very pleasant sushi chefs. Kotaro-san, part owner/chef, used to work at Shiro’s, but he’s not the kind to brag about it. "

Sushi Zen

Name:Sushi Zen
Address:13206 Bothell-Everett Hwy Suite 402
Phone:(425) 357-1611
Fax:(425) 357-0932
Opened:Lunch 11:30am-2pm Dinner 5pm-10pm Sunday 5pm-9pm
Review:"Sushi Zen is about 20 miles North of Seattle. About a 30 minute drive from downtown and worth every minute. I admit I am a bit of a food and restaurant snob. Afer dismissing Sushi Zen for nearly everyday for 6 months as I drove past saying to myself "..right, sushi in the suburbs. What a joke!" Well after 6 months of drive-by´s (I live 5 minutes away), I decided to pop and discredit the "suburban imposter". Boy did I get my ass kicked! My wife and I loved it! It was so good that we decided it had to be a fluke. So the next day we brought my parents there for lunch. Excellent again! Since then my wife and i have become regulars, and we have become friendly with James the owner. James is very creative and definatley not a traditionalist. This is a good thing. I have been to every Sushi Bar in Seattle, and still frequent a few of them, but Sushi Zen is my favorite. James gives bigger fatter cuts of fish than any place I´ve been, and his prices are lower than any in the city. Try the "Stuffed Tomato" my favorite. No, there isn´t any tomato in it. It is a mixter of Japanese mayo, tobiko, crab, shrimp, chili sauce, and tempura flakes over rice and wrapped in thinly sliced pieces of maguro. ROCK!!! It´s a bit rich so it is usually served at the end of the feast. Go there at once!"

Yoshinobo CLOSED !

Name:Yoshinobo CLOSED !
Address:514 South Jackson St., Seattle, WA 98104
Phone:(206) 405-4646
Review:"A couple days ago I dropped in at Yoshinobo (formerly the New Mikado) for a snack and a look-see. Very plush and posh place. High-back black upholstered swivel chairs at the sushi bar. It had been several years since I´d been to the Mikado, but my vague memory is that the physical appeareance of the place hasn´t changed much if at all. I was less impressed with the sushi, however. I only had a spider roll and an order of amaebi, but both (while tasty) had their shortcomings. For one thing, the amaebi (no head, which I consider the best part) were not symmetrical; one of them was missing most of its tail. Also, too much wasabi under the shrimp. And the spider roll was almost frighteningly spicy, as if a liberal prtion of spicy tuna roll sauce had been used; actually, I think the tobiko had some jalapeno or tabasco in it. In other words, the chef was not too careful, and rather overinclined to hot spices. The impression of sloppiness was compounded when the (Korean) waiter *under*charged me by three dollars (he forgot to charge me for the amaebi!) And it`s not as if they were too *busy* to do things right; I was the first customer of the day, and while I was there only one more party arrived; and there were at least three waitpersons and four cooks on hand. So I would not *highly* recommend Yoshinobo, but if I were in the immediate vicinity with a handering for sushi, I wouldn´t shun the place, either."
