Akida

Name:Akida
Address:814 N Robinson St.,Richmond,VA 23220
Phone:(804) 359-8036
Reviews:" Akida has two locations. I've never been to Hana Zushi, but I've seen the menu and Akida's prices are better. The Robinson St. location is tiny (36 seats) and a little run-down, but the sushi is EXCELLENT as is the service. The West end location is about 6 months old, much newer, and the service and food quality are on par with the Robinson location. "
- Joe Kusterbeck (joekusterbeck@NOSPAMhotmail.com) [September 25th 2001]
"I go there every Friday night and have always been treated to the best freshest sashimi this side of Japan. Try the specials, they're amazing! The prices are in line for the quality you get. If price is a concern, order single rolls ala carte. It will fill you up and you will enjoy the subtle and superior taste of freshness. Jenny, the head staff will take extra care to see that you have a wonderful dining experience. I rate it AAAAA+++++ "

"I've eaten at all the Richmond Sushi restaurants and Akida is by far the best. The West Broad location has better atmosphere and is larger than the Robinson location, which used to be an English pub and still looks like one inside. Sashimi is big and fresh! Service is great. Prices are good, especially lunch specials. A+ "

"Just a few hours ago I had my first dining experience at a REAL Japanese Restaurant called 'Akida'. When I first walked in, I felt as if I had stepped into Japan itself, the atmosphere was strikingly authentic and very cozy. I felt right at home as my kind waiter seated up and served us drinks. Immediately I knew I was going to love eating here. Then he came from behind the sushi bar carrying our Miso Soup, which was the best I have ever eaten. Then came the Shrimp Tempura, which I loved as well. Relaxing under the dim yellow light, casting from the paper lamps and shades, I gaized at the ancient prints on the walls. Samurai. Geisha. Sumo. Then I ordered my main corse, which was Chicken Teriyaki. When it was placed before me, my mouth was watering. Sizzling in that warm plate, just waiting to be enjoyed. And so I did just that. Dessert was the most exotic part of my whole meal. I chose to try the 'Fried Banana', which was just that, a carefully fried banana with whip cream on top and a bit of dipping honey. This was a dessert unlike anything I've ever tried before, it was simply relaxing to savor and enjoy. Overall this restaurant is highly impressive and is definitely at the top of my list of favorite Japanese Restaurants, I HIGHLY recommend giving this wonderful little piece of Japan a try, I know I look forward to going there another day soon! "
- Michael Allen (catfancy@ignmail.com) [June 6th 2004]
"I took my family there tonight and it was impressive! The miso soup was probably the best I've had since I lived in Hokkaido. I had pork Katsu Don and it took me back to Japan....I loved it! Most Japanese places are too Americanized, but Akida does it right. The sushi, california rolls, Teriyaki chicken and seafood yaki udon were superb. Please do yourself a favour and try them just one time. The prices are very reasonable and the food and service is excellent. If you have the same experience as I did you'll go back again and again. Hana Zushi

Name:Hana Zushi
Address:1309 East Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23219-4138
Phone:(804) 225-8801
Reviews:"Good selection of sushi."
- Dave Ross (rossx005@mail.genmills.com) [November 26th 1997]
"I have been eating at HanaZushi from itīs creation, but itīs quality tends to be hit or miss. Generally it is better to eat there later in the week after the weekīs delivery of fresh fish has arrived. Watch what fish they cut and serve you from sometimes what is in the counter coolers that looks great is not what you get."
- S. Saslaw
"I started eating sushi before it was fashionable, when only diehards even thought about Uni with Quail Egg -- 30 years ago. Every time I eat at Hana Zushi, I am reminded why it's the only Sushi Bar I go to in Richmond: Fresh excellent raw fish sliced and served in the traditional manner by Itamaisan born and raised in Japan. And that's what it's all about, raw fish lovers. Enjoy Hana !! "
- Doc Chapman, Private Investigator (docchapman@verizon.net) [Sept 14th 2005]
"Hana's is the only authentic Sushi restaurant I've been to in the RVA. My opinion is biased as I work for a Japanese company and heard from my Japanese co-workers that it is their favorite and most closely approximating American/Japanese Sushi they've had rivaling sushi from home. Important, among other factors, is the hand-temperature (vs. chilled from most places) of their pieces, thereby allowing the true flavors of the meat to be available for your tongue! "

Haru Sushi

Name:Haru Sushi

Ichiban (former Sushi Bay)

Phone:(804) 754-8070
Reviews:""
- W. Kosar [July 5th 2002]
"I have had nothing but good experiences at Sushi Bay. The restaurant is open and bright with the presences of a lot of pine and other light woods. The portions are generous and presented in a very attractive manner and the staff is gracious and friendly. The location of Sushi Bay is nestled in a shopping center in a residential area. Because of this it probably does not get the same level of traffic that the other Richmond sushi establishments get. Get out there and patronize this restaurant so that the location doesn't shut it down! "
- S. Silbert [February 13th 2003]
"Sushi Bay is now Ichiban. It is HANDS DOWN the best sushi restaurant in Richmond. Shu is so friendly and makes you feel right at home and Alex is a brilliant sushi chef. Whereas Akida received health violations, Ichiban has been congratulated on their perfect reports! "

Kabuto

Name:Kabuto Japanese House of Steaks
Address:13158 Midlothian, Turnpike / Richmond, VA 23113
Phone:(804) 379 -7979
Opened: 4.30pm - 9.30 pm
Reviews:"This is definitely the best traditional sushi bar in the whole city of Richmond. In fact, of all the Restaurants in Richmond that serve sushi, the Kabuto restaurants seem to be the only ones with real Japanese sushi chefs. "
- Ron Bloom (ezekiel25-17@comcast.net) [Oct 21st 2003]
"This is not a traditional sushi bar. It is mostly a steakhouse if that. The fish is really subpar, tasted like a few days too old. I really don't recommend anyone to have the sushi here. I moved from CA early this year and the only thing I really miss is the sushi there, but I will continue my search here in Richmond. Will update the other restaurants here on this page. Moshi

Name:Moshi
Address:3321 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221
Phone:(804) 359-1151
Review:"The sushi here didn't taste very fresh - I think the problem might have been more with the quality of the rice, but I wasn't entirely able to pinpoint it. Also, be very careful about what you order. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and a spicy salmon roll when I was there because these rolls are traditionally rolls that just contain fish, yet they had cucumber (which I have encountered occasionally) and avocado. I hate avocado. And there was more avocado than fish in the rolls, which seemed to be a trend. So be careful what you order and keep in mind that you are probably wasting your money ordering green things instead of fish. "

Sticky Rice Restaurant

Name:Sticky Rice Restaurant
Address:2232 W. Main St., Richmond, VA
Phone:(804) 358-7870
Reviews:"One of my favorite sushi restaurants in the US, by far, in terms of creativity and taste. This is only the second place I've ever been to that actually uses fresh crab in their California rolls. The atmosphere is a little smokey and dark, but I think this is part of its charm. They have some great rolls, as well as other Pan Asian cuisine on their menus. "
- Roddie (roddie@krweb.net) [Nov 4th 2004]
"If you like a smoky atomosphere and rowdy drunks, then this is the place you want. The food was substandard, wait staff s-u-c-k-s, and all in all an unpleasant experience for me and my wife. It is a place for those who don't like to taste their food or hear themselves think during a 'dining ' experience. Judge for yourself and be afraid! "
- Don Luke [Feb 14th 2005]
"This restaurant is charming and epitomizes the 'charm' of Richmond; it is creative and often humorously boisterous in the late evening hours. The food is creative and can easily please even the non-sushi lovers, but the staff brings down the atomsphere. On several occassions with several different servers, the servers were condescending to a customer who was not familiar with sushi, and extremely rude and curt. If the staff was nicer, this would be a fun place to hang out for a young crowd, but I wouldn't bother unless you happen to know the staff personally. "
- Maria (koukla04@yahoo.com) [Dec 23rd 2005]
"The service is horrible, and the fish was fishy! Save your time and money. Go somewhere else. "
- TEN [Nov 4th 2006]
"I was always told about how great Sticky Rice was, so I thought I would go check it out. The atmosphere was pretty great, and the food was decent as well. Overall, the experience was pretty nice, but for the price I feel like I could have done better going elsewhere.
