Blowfish Restaurant and Sushi Bar

Name:Blowfish Restaurant and Sushi Bar
Address:309 West Gray,Houston, TX
Phone:(713) 526-5294
Review:" They don't actually serve blowfish there, but the sushi at this new (opened 2002) Houston restaraunt is superb. Especially of note are the world-class (IMHO) rolls, many of them house specialties not found elsewhere. Very upscale, and priced as such. One of the best in Houston, even though it is so new. Located less than 10 blocks from downtown. "

Cafe Japon

Name:Cafe Japon
Address:3915 Kirby, Houston, TX
Phone:(713) 529-1668
Reviews:"$1 and $1.25 sushi all day, 20 fantastic hand rolls. Nine great house special rolls."
"The service is HORRIBLE. It is beyond apathetic, taking the next step to become argumentative with the customer. They tried to serve me a glass of wine that was barely 1/2 full, (at $7.50 a pop!) and when I asked them to make it right, the hostess became condescending and said it was their 'policy' and said it LOOKED like less because the glass was too big. Give me a break!!! "
- Andrea Garcia (andrea.garcia@getronics.com) [August 2nd 2001]
" I frequent Cafe Japon BECAUSE of it's excellent service and sushi, and I would recommend them. They have also been very accomodating with my food allergies. "

Kubo's

Name:Kubo's
Address:2414 University Blvd. Suite 200, Houston, TX 77005
Phone:(713) 528-7878
Opened:Tue-Sun: lunch & dinner
Reviews:"I've been eating sushi in Houston for 40 years (I'm Japanese) and Kubo's is easily the best Sushi Houston has ever seen. The selections are authentic and prepared by real Japanese chefs, not amateur hires from mexican restaurants like ...ahem... the local Miyako chain. They feature a fantastic selection of foods and a dozen or more Sakes. "
- John Nakamura (smeggy@ifrance.com) [April 15th 2003]
"Located in the Rice Village/Medical Center Area. Quite popular with locals around Rice University and the Medical Center. "
- Mark Moore (MMoore@wmalaw.com) [Nov 23rd 2003]
"First time and last time Kubo's will see me! Ordered sashimi, and got the smallest pieces I have ever seen with the highest prices in town. When multiple people ordered the same sashimi, the sushi chef put it all on one plate---not easy to designate portions of uni or ikura when served this way. "

Miyako

Name:Miyako
Address:6345 Westheimer, Houston, TX
Phone:(713) 781 6300
Reviews:"They offer $1.15 nigiri and $1.50 handrolls all day every day on a large variety, but not on the more exotic/expensive fish. They also offer a daily special for $8.95/$9.95, depending on location that includes soup and salad, which is really quite a bargain."
- Sheryl (smexic@flash.net) [July 20th 1997]
"Several locations around Houston. Ate here a few times because it was convenient. It is usually very busy (go figure). They serve boring and mediocre (at best) Americanized sushi. Would rather eat a burger than get sushi here again. If you don't know your nigiri from your sashimi, eat here so I can get a seat at the sushi bar in the good places. "
- Zed (zedola@hotmail.com) [September 17th 2001]
"The worse service I've ever encountered! The woman who claimed to be the manager outright accused one of the customer of trying to run out on a bill. The accused customer was on crutches, and they were kept behind the bar when she needed to use in order to go to the restroom. Her friend tried to get a staff member to retreive them, no every one just ran around and 'looked' busy, ignoring this person on purpose. When she took the liberty of getting the canes for her friend, the manager out right yelled in her face, accused her and the friend in the cane of trying to skip out on a bill. I placed a toro order, and was a witness to the whole incident from the point when the lady on crutches says 'I need to go to the restroom' to 'you lying, you try to cheat and not pay bill'. I have never set foot in ANY miyako restaurant ever since. "
- [February 13th 2003]
"Unfortunately, I encountered some of the bad service, too. The waitress did not bring my credit card back and acted very annoyed when I asked for it! The sushi is inexpensive, but mediocre. The lunch box is a good deal, but the tempura and teriyaki sauce is SO greasy and the meat overcooked and tough. It's so conveniently located, I wished it was better. "

"Sasaki truly has the best Sushi in Houston. Which leads to their awards such as Houston Press: Best Of The Best and numerous Blue Ribbon awards for clean kitchens. The Sushi Chef Toda has been with the restaurant from the very start. He can and will make you some things that other Sushi places have never even heard of. The staff and atmosphere are inviting and wonderful. Sasaki has my business forever. "

Tokyo Bowl

Name:Tokyo Bowl
Address:2402 Bay Area Blvd, Houston, TX
Phone:(281) 480-5311
Reviews:" A small, but incredible place! The best sushi in Houston, no wait, anywhere! Pieces are big, rolls are exceptional. Be sure to try the Lingo Roll (which features green apple) and the Dynamite Frito (a spicy tuna, tempura roll). No need to head downtown in search of great sushi! You will not be disappointed...Tokyo Bowl is wonderful! "
- Suzy Vallance [September 14th 2001]
"Tokyo Bowl is my all time favorite sushi spot, not only for the wonderful quality of sushi, but also for its literal 'mom and pop' atmosphere. It is owned and operated by a Japanese family who prepare and oversee the service and production, and they do an *excellent* job of it. I hate it when sushi restaurants serve stingy portions and they have never done that to me here- and I have been going for over 7 years. If you find yourself in Southeast Houston, this is the place to indulge your sushi craving! "

Typhoon Sushi Bar & Lounge

Name:Typhoon Sushi Bar & Lounge
Address:5610 Richmond, Houston, TX
Phone:(832) 242-2765
Fax:(832) 242-2757
Opened:Wed-Sun: 8pm-2am
Review:"This place is not your average Sushi Bar. The excellent quality sushi, full bar, and variety of menu items not found in other Sushi Bars gives Typhoon a niche that other places can't fill. This restaurant/bar/lounge serves a full menu until 2am nightly. Where else can you find qualiy food at those hours? I love this place! The food, the people, and the atmosphere all make it worthwhile. If you are looking for something different, or good food late at night, Typhoon is the answer. "
