Opened:Mon-Thu: 5.30pm-10.30pm, Fri,Sat: 5.30pm-11pm, Sun: 5pm-10pm
Reviews:"Rock´n Roll Sushi. Voted: ´Best Album Orientated Sushi...´ Chef Kiyoshi Hayakawa prepares a variety of traditional and not so traditional Sushi. And there is a WASABICAM: Live pictures snd stillshots from the restaurant (Former Flying Kamikazi´s)."
"The albacore melts in your mouth. One of the most fun places to go as well. Great wait staff, imaginative menu and to top it off, a sake menu that can´t be beat. Go before 6.00pm or expect to be turned away. Small place that gets REALLY busy."
- Robert Boydston (rboydstn@jps.net) [January 25th 1999]
"If you're into style over substance, this is the place for you. Staff had a lousy attitude, rolls were poorly executed, and every piece of nigiri looked like it had been thrown and not assembled. "
- david oteri (eversnail@aol.com) [January 15th 2002]
"I thought the sushi was pretty good, but found the rolls excellent (some of the best I've had anywhere) and service good. However, it was not crowded when I was there. Based on the earlier comment, I guess it depends what night you are there. "

Anzu

Name:Anzu
Address:222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA 94102
Phone:(415) 394-1100
Review:"ANZU has something on the menu for everyone. This was our second trip to San Francisco in a year. The ANZU Restaurant located on the second floor of the Hotel Nikko was a must. We made reservations 2 weeks in advance. From steak to sushi, every thing right down to the sauce is obviously very well planned. Your list of sushi restaurants is incomplete without ANZU and Master Sushi Chef Kazuhito Takahashi's creations. "

Blowfish Sushi

Name:Blowfish Sushi
Address:2170 Bryant Street, San Francisco
Phone:(415) 285-3848
Fax:(415) 285-0286
Opened:Fri-Sat: 11.30am - 11.30pm, Sun-Thu: 11.30am - 10.30pm
Reviews:" On the border of the Mission and Potrero Hill, Blowfish is a total experience; unlike most such restaurants, however, Blowfish features top-notch and creative food. Ingredient quality is top-notch and Ritsuo Tsuchida, the Executive Chef and co-owner, is consistantly creative with combinations and presentation. The ambience is anime, with monitors continually showing captioned videos of both popular and obscure japanimation. It can get noisy and crowded, but it´s worth it."
- D. Turner (ddt@primenet.com) [July 11th 1999]
"For the most part, the experience at Blowfish was good. The nigiri got a 7 out of 10 from me. The problem was that I went especially for their namesake - blowfish. It turns out that this is not a normal menu item. It is only served very occasionally. My impression was less then monthly. If you´re into good wine, interesting atmosphere, and relatively good food, this is the place. But don´t hold your breath for blowfish (not that you should when eating this anyway)."
- Jonathan Moss (mossyj@earthlink.net)
"My friends took me there on my visit out there. The sushi was pretty good. Their selection was excellent. It was a bit on the pricey side. I have to say....they whip up a mean Tokyo Tea (version of Long Island Ice Tea). Very Tasty!!"

Reviews:"Cash only at this fun place with reasonable priced sushi."
"Mismatched kitchenware and wonderful kukicha tea greet you at your table. Rolls have ingredients such as mango and papaya and fresh, harder to find fish are always on the specialty menu. Vegetarians are well met by the vegetable gyoza and chef selected rolls. The walls are covered in posters and flyers for butoh dance performances and after a while you'll realize the couple behind the counter are the same people as on many of the posters. Turns out Country Station sushi is run by the same couple who brought Butoh to the Bay Area!! Definitely worth checking out. "

Ebisu

Name:Ebisu
Address:1283 9th Ave & Irving (south of Golden Gate Park), San Francisco, CA
Phone:(415) 566-1770
Opened:Mon-Wed: 11.30am - 2pm & 5pm - 10pm; Thu: 11.30am - 2pm & 5pm - midnight, Fri,Sat: 11:30am - 2pm5pm-midnight, Sun closed
Reviews:"As one of the regulars (1/wk - 9yrs), I maybe biased, but, I think Ebisu is one of, if not the best sushi/restaurant in SF, congenial staff, excellent service, great fish and other stuff (cooked food is wonderful also), amazing off-menu ´specials´ (when they aren´t up to their eyeballs in orders) like: Pink Cadillac, Louisiana Hotlinks, Caterpillar Roll , etc... (warning: some or all of the preceeding may be addictive). Busy: usually. The longest I have waited was 2:15 (I had a sudden craving at 8:00 pm on a friday...and that was for 1), however it is usually not that bad. Best times are opening or after 9:00 pm Mo.-Th., otherwise expect to wait."
- Robert Parks (rparks@activa.net)
"Just wanted to add my review of this restaurant already listed. Ebisu is the best sushi restaurant in San Francisco!!! I was just back visiting and went there with 3 others. We were able to get seated all together at the sushi bar in no time at all. It was a usual busy night so we were very pleased. Usually there is a 20 min or sometimes longer wait, especially at busy times but it is WELL worth the wait! The staff is incredibly friendly, the sushi chefs amazingly fast, accurate and very entertaining. The fish is extremely fresh. Ask the chefs for one of there many many special creations not on the menu.. let them surprise you! "
- Christine Cortelyou (RoanRider1963@aol.com) [Jan 5th 2004]
"Ebisu has the best sushi I have ever eaten. I have been there on two occasions and both times it was amazing. I'm not sure if it was the incredible food quality or the originality of the menu, but this place has really taken hold of me. I couldn't think of visiting SF and not stopping here. It's regarded as the best sushi in SF which really says something. "

Hamano Sushi

Opened:Mon: 5.30pm-9.30pm, Tue-Sat: 5.30pm-10.30pm, Sun: 5.30pm-9.30pm
Review:"I lived down the block from this restaurant for over a year and frequented it once or twice per week. The fish is incredibly fresh, the slices large and almost sensual - sashimi is thus really a must. Sushi rolls are creative - excellent spider rolls (soft shell crab), spicy tuna, as well as the basic california rolls. Chef Hiro-San would also make special creations for me - strips of tender ika in a batter of uni and quail's egg topped with tobiko, chunks of maguro with japanese yam and daikon radish, etc. Give yourself over to him. Along with Ebisu, I would say this is San Francisco's very best. Avoid cheaper favorites like 'No-Name' on Church unless you need a really quick fix of mediocre sushi. Spend the extra cash and go to Hamano. "

Kiss Seafood Japanese Restaurant

Name:Kiss Seafood Japanese Restaurant
Address:1700 Laguna Street (on corner of Sutter), San Francisco, CA
Phone:(802) 422-4241
Reviews:"The chef's menu was EXCELLENT!!! The food, the presentation was amazing. From dish to dish, it was one flavor after another. Wish I could eat there every night. The place is small, only seats up to 12-14 people but I would recommend the sushi bar to watch the sushi chef create his masterpieces. "
- Ely (elylai@yahoo.com) [Sept 15th 2003]
"Have been to Kiss three times. The chef-- and sole cook-- is an artist. Next time I will try the $35 chef's menu. Notes: Place is tiny. Reserve, or be ready to walk around the neighborhood for an hour till someone leaves. It's also quiet. Be ready to ooh and ahh about the food, and not make a whole lot of noise about anything else. Finally: Chef speaks English, waitress (his wife?) doesn't. Specials menu is in Japanese only. Thus, you may have to put extra effort into communication to know what you're ordering. "

Their service isn´t bad, but try being a bit more patient with the waitresses there, for they´re native Japanese and are not very fluent in English. Recommendation: Spicy Tuna Rolls, Fresh Oysters."

Mikaku

Name:Mikaku
Address:323 Grant Avenue, San Francisco
Review:"The best sushi we had while we were there was at Mikaku. That´s right in the centre of town, a couple blocks south of the Chinatown gate. We ate lunch there on our final day in San Francisco. It was manically busy so we just ordered basic stuff - bento and chirashi. But we enjoyed it so much we returned for an early dinner before out flight. Way quiter then. Something we really liked about Mikaku was that it felt comfortable. Interior is far from slick. Basic timber tables, weird kitschy Japanese stuff behind the bar as well as a TV. Chef Ito loves Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! It was like being in his home - informal and relaxing. There´s a whiteboard with daily specials - most of them traditional dishes you don´t see too often in the US. His menu includes a long list of different maki combinations, most of which we tried and all were very good. His nigiri toppings went well beyond US-sushi-bar staples. He has kohada (spotted sardine) flown in from Japan as well as fresh sea eel which he cooks himself."

On The Bridge Cafe

Name:On The Bridge Cafe
Address:JapanCenter, San Francisco
Review:"Also recommended in Japantown - On the Bridge Cafe in JapanCenter. One of the specialties is spaghetti served with sauces made from Japanese ingredients. Not sure about you but I´m a huge fan of natto and the chef´s natto spaghetti sauce takes the ingredient into a whole new mind-blowing dimension. Didn´t make it back there to try his other specialty, custom-made curry, but it seemed like a cool concept: choose the level of heat (mild, spicy, X-spicy thru XXX-spicy) and choose any number of ingredients from a list of about 30 which includes natto and roasted whole garlic cloves. Mmmm!"

Review:"We first tried Sushi Hunter about a year ago when the sushi bar we used to go to was closed. We have been regular customers ever since. We eat here 3-4 times per month. It is well worth the drive from San Rafael. We always eat from the All-You-Can-Eat Menu. It is the only place we know of in the entire Bay Area where this menu has more than 50 made-to-order items to choose from. The all-you-can-eat items are identical to the same items ordered from the a la carte menu (generous fish --- not too much rice). We strongly recommend Sushi Hunter to anyone who loves sushi and traditional Japanese cooking. Strong warning: once you try it, you may become addicted like we did. "

Incredibly delicious, absolutely huge and great value at only $9!! We figured there´d be room at the end of our meal to fit in a few of the chef´s sushi recommendations but we were way too full. Rare state for us!"

Review:" This is a fairly new sushi restaurant to San Francisco. The sushi is incredibly fresh and tasty, as is the rest of their Japanese fare. It may take a little longer than a hungry person would like for your sushi to reach your table, but that's just because the chef is taking the time to make sure that your order is perfect. It has a casual atmosphere, with a high-tech soundtrack playing in the background and a fishtank behind the sushi bar. In my humble opinion, this is the very best sushi restaurant in San Francisco. Take a chance and go there once, you'll be thanking me later -- when you're going back for your second, third, or fourth time! "
