Review: | " Small, friendly service mother and son owned and operated for about eighteen years. not much on atmosphere but good sushi. Try some of chef Alan Hondas specialty rolls. I like the 'japanese bagel' (smoked salmon, cream cheese, asparagus) and 's.g.r.' (garlic roll) as well as traditonal sushi and sashimi. " |

- Oliver Berghaus (oberghaus@iname.com) [September 8th 1997]
"The best sushi in the Sacramento area. This place can get crowded but the well prepared food is well worth the wait. The sushi bar is always stocked with a wide variety of fish including a number of things you just donīt see often elsewhere."
- Steve Otruba (otruba@mitre.org)
"Still the best sushi bar in Sacramento! A wide variety of well prepared traditional sushi and sashimi. Always gets a crowd particularly on weekends but well worth the wait if needed."

Review: | "I've actually been to Japan. And having traveled all over Davis and Sacramento, I have to say that I haven't found anything that comes as close to true Japanese cuisine as 'Sushi on the River'. I recomend everything!! The atmosphere is definitely 'Rock & Roll' and they don't take reservations, but if you want the freshest and largest selection of sushi this side of the Sacramento river, there is no where else to go. Reviews: | "I have traveled the world, and the closest I have come to the variety offered by this restaurant is of course in Japan. However, even in Japan, because of the cost per sushi in the small vendor shops near shopping areas, there is a far greater savings here at Umekoīs. The Buffet price of $10.95 for lunch and slightly higher for the dinner includes an eye appealing list of favorites and much more than I have ever seen anywhere else. My wife & I have frequented this establishment for nearly two years and the quality and varied menu selection remains very high. The bonus for the dinner meal is the lobster tail and snow crab legs! Remember, this is all-you-can-eat for just one low price. This includes servings of Sashimi and other raw delicacies such as Tako, and salmon eggs. There are huge containers of Oysters & Mussels, plus Hawaiian Shrimp in two different sauces. The Tempura dishes along with the Udon noodles are also worth mentioning. The desert bar features several types of pastry items, and of course a very lite and creamy ice milk to accompany these little delites. I understand that the owners, Soo Yuan Restaurant, Inc., actually started in San Francisco at the original site at Miyako Mall in the Japan Center where they still operate today. I am so happy to see them choose Sacramento as their enterprise ecpands. I wish them well, and would like to see them gain prominence in being chosen for a candidate in your competition for the year 2000. I want you to know that neither my wife or myself have ever met or spoken to the owners, and have never written a review like this for any restaurant before. We just appreciate good quality and service with a price that is more than affordable. We have been to so many Japanese Restaurants that are way too pricey for much less than you what you would see on just one food island in Umekoīs." |

" I enthusiastically agree !!! I've only been back in Sacramento for about 4 months and have dined here at least 8 times. I came here from the Reno area and had been totally spoiled by the 'all you can eat' sushi bars there (still have my favorites). The best selection is why I like this place so much. I can bring my friends and family who are sushi challenged and treat them to a wonderful selection of Japaneese food other than sushi and usually get them to try the more exotic stuff, because it is so tastefully presented. My only regret is that they don't serve uni, even as an 'extra charge' side dish. Will continue to shout this restaurants praises to all who will listen. It's a priviledge to have them in the neighborhood. "
