- Takashi Sanae (takashi@asakuma.com)
" I have not eaten at Matsuhisa, Ginza (a very famous local Sushi bar known for its exclusivity and extreme cost ($200+ per person), but it may be the best Sushi in Los Angeles; amazingly good and original, ask the chef to take care of you and he will! ! (On the pricey side though)."

Owner Morihiro Onodera uses real wasabi and even grinds his own rice daily. Leave the ordering to Mori and he will select the best seasonal seafood available. Chef Mori is not crazy about making 'American Style' sushi rolls, so don't take it personal. "

Noshi Sushi

Name:Noshi Sushi
Address:4503 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, California
Phone:(323) 469-3458
Review:"Noshi used to be about the size of a closet. I think all the patrons who used to wait over an hour to sit down were overjoyed when Mr. Noshi moved just down the street to a much larger location. I love Noshi, period. They have such a high customer rate that the sushi is always incredibly fresh. Mr Noshi keeps the offerings simple and the quality extremely high. No oysters ever but the uni is usually the best deal in town. And itīs good. as of late Oct 99, the hamachi is 3.60. Itīs gone up from the 3.20 of just a few months ago, but still lower than other places in town. There is a fantastic sashimi individual boat for just $15.00 with 4 thick slices of hamachi, 3 of tuna, some scallops, squid, and three of those red-tipped clam things. Yellow ginger is excellent. The best. Tea is unimpeachable. They know how to do it at Noshi. Very popular with the local Japanese or Korean patrons. 5 sushi chefs work at a U shaped bar, and there is plenty of table seating. Saturday nightīs reservation markerboard typically yields a 20-30 minute wait. Such a deal. UNfortunately, one for their most legendary chefs, Susumi, just left for greener pastures. Hope he comes back! My favorite sushi bar in the LA basin."

Address:923 E. Third St. (bet. Alameda St. & Santa Fe Ave.) Downtown, LA
Phone:(213) 687-7178
Reviews:"Donīt let the funky location deter you from enjoying high quality sushi in the most minimalist of settings. Sushi is served on what looks like giant railroad ties and in several cases is still moving itīs so fresh. Well worth the trip to the loft district, east of the downtown core."
- Paul St. Pierre (pauls@asymetrix.com) [December 7th 1998]
"Los Angeles, USA/California RID: 1053 Overrated sushi. Boring, uninteresting presentation. Portions are just okay, but combined with the price are poor. Nothing interesting (no monkfish liver, no sweet shrimp), and the rolls are simple and use less fish than is warranted. This seems to be a very popular downtown sushi restaurant, but I'd go to Sai-Sai (Olive + 6th) any day before R-23. Not worth the trek. "

Reviews:"Itīs new Sushi Bar in Los Angeles. Always crowded with Japanese people. If you looking for real Tokyo style sushi, try Kiriko."
- Joe Munemura [June 23rd 2000]
"A wonderful, intimate dining experience. The best sushi in Los Angeles served by one of the nicest chefs - Ken Y Namba. Mrs. Namba is a very gracious hostess. Superb!"
- Bruce M. Barack [July 4th 2000]
"Kiriko's itamae-san Ken Y Namba is a master, creating dazzling sushi from only the finest ingredients. His skill and devotion to his art can be seen not only in his beautiful creations but also in his ability to create in-house specialities using both traditional and modern methods. He does not use store-bought items, but instead marinates items like kohada with his own special techniques. Ken-san always has something new and special he has done ready to serve with a smile. Kiriko is a sushi connoisseur's dream. "
- Noel D. Baird (noelbaird@we.mediaone.net) [March 21st 2001]
"I'm addicted; I enjoy Kiriko at least once a week. Every guest I take to Kiriko leaves telling me that it was the best sushi they have ever experienced. Ken brings his experience as a top chef in several countries to his business in Los Angeles, which has been growing steadily by word-of-mouth since he opened in 2000. On your first visit, request the 'Omakase' to experience a variety of Kiriko specialties followed by your choice of Ken's unique home-made ice cream or sorbet. If you choose to order by item, make sure you sample the Albacore (with a non-traditional sauce), and Ken's unbelievable masterpiece, the 'seared toro'. "
- Eric Hammond (kiriko-fan@dreamsome.com) [May 7th 2002]
"We were highly DISAPPOINTED in Kiriko. Based on the reviews, we were expecting quality sushi...we received horrible cuts of yellowtail sashimi (not only was the cute terrible, but some pieces still had the skin on). The portions were extremely small and the service was terrible. If you want a nice experience, go to Sushi Roku. I will never go here ever again and I will make sure that none of my friends fall into this TRAP!!! "

Sushi Nozawa

Name:Sushi Nozawa
Address:11288 Ventura Blvd., (2 blocks west of Vineland Ave.), Studio City (Los Angeles) , CA 91604
Phone:(818) 508-7017
Reviews:"When going to this fabolous sushi establishment, one can easily be fooled by the mini-mall facade. The food, simply, could not be much better. The signature roll would have to be the crap hand-roll (they donīt serve cut.) If you decide to eat at the sushi bar, Mr. Nozawa simply serves you what he feels like serving you. There is a sign that says īTrust Meī and you should Trust Him. Similar to Hide Sushi on Sawtelle, reservations are not allowed, so be prepared to wait. Itīs definitely worth it. His sushi is fresh and large and the rice is prepared to perfection. It cost about $25.00 a person if you let him serve you the food -- depending on the alcohol consumption. I have never enjoyed such quality sushi before and the prices are SO reasonable. This bombshell place wasnīt on the cover of the New York Times for no reason."
- Zack (zackca@worlddet.att.net) [June 8th 1998]
"I looked up your website - Great! It amused me very much. Matsuhisha in L.A. is also my favourite! However, if itīs Sushi or Sashimi you want, there is no beating Sushi Nozawa on Ventura Boulevard for quality and freshness. Nozawa San is a genius, but incredibly moody and unfriendly. I suppose he feels he doesnīt need to be nice to anyone - the queue outside his restaurant stays just as long! As a purist and traditionalist, he will throw you out if you dare order anything un-Japanese like Spicy Tuna or a California Roll. You are best served waiting until a space at the sushi bar is available and then ordering his īTrust meī menu. He will keep on feeding you with his best and freshest until you say stop. One reason for the high quality is his stringency with editing the fish, cutting away anything which even comes close to not being top quality. Treat him like a God and he will feed you like a king."
- Anthony Waller (Anthonchik@aol.com) [August 29th 1998]
"Freshest Uni Iīve ever had. I have only one other comment about this excellent sushi: Ultrawide."

Opened:? - 2 am (approx)
Reviews:"Fantastic sushi of the highest calibre on Sunset Blvd. in a very intimate setting. Sit upstairs in the lounge if you can, deep comfy leather couches, very soft lighting, intimate atmosphere. Recommended dishes: Rainbow (cut) roll. I prefer it with the spicy tuna center. $10.00 for 8 large pieces, incl. salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and other goodies. Their signature roll: OUT OF THIS WORLD !! Also great: Everything! Several original rolls, all of which are definitely worth trying (Sunset roll, etc.) Better-than-average tempura dishes. For the non-sushi lover: Excellent teriyaki filet mignon dinner served with tempura, salad and miso soup - top quality filet used ! Crowd is very hip (avg. age 18-30) and people go there to relax and have a great (intimate - upstairs anyway) time with friends, lovers, etc. Service: At the bar good attentive chefs, warm atmosphere. Downstairs: ok, not fantastic. Upstairs: be prepared to wait quite a while for food at peak hours. Loud: (usually) music varies from reggae to Led Zeppelin to (*blech*) disco. Valet Parking: $2.50 Reservations: Avalaible for most days/times several days in advance (best tables go to those who tip generously of course)"

"THE BEST, itīs as simple as that! Four stars !"
- John E. Sasaki (sasaki@gte.net) [Apr 26 1998]
" I learned of this restaurant and the style of sushi served in the 'trust me' chef's special fashion after enjoying a couple of excursions to Hawaii where there is a sister operation. My recent visit to LA confirmed that this is an outstanding sushi experience. The sushi is prepared like a wine tasting, with the chef sending out each piece prepared as individual servings based on what is available and what he likes. Each serving builds upon the previous and makes for a truly unique taste. It is in the old school manner of the traditional fish cutters of Japan. Hot rice and extremely fresh fish. The hot rice brings out flavors you have never tasted. Unfortunately, I was delayed by my air carrier and I attempted to reserve more than the limit at the bar so the owner/chef put my group at a table far away from the action and left the bar open. It was quite a damper and I would recommend not upsetting the chef to avoid this kind of treatment. We did, however, amaze the help with our continuous ordering and spent a huge amount of money, but the less than understanding attitude for the effort we made to visit will keep me away in the future. Interestingly, after our first visit to the sister restaurant in Honolulu, we returned with a very large party and were treated very, very well. My recommendation is to visit the island paradise and check out that operation for a most unique sushi meal. "

" 'Trust Me' is the chef's special at this amazing restaurant, and it's the only way to go. From the moment you walk into the restaurant, you'll realize that the focus is on the fish - no fancy sauces, no creative rolls - just the freshest, most amazing fish you'll ever eat. The fish that Chef Nobi serves here tastes like no other - pure magic."

Review:" The only traditional Tokyo-style omakase in the city. Shige-san is truly a one-of-a-kind chef. No teriyaki, no bowl of rice, no inside-out roll, no tempura. Simple, brilliant, fresh fish on rice. Worth every penny. "

Review:"The absolute best sushi that I have ever had in Los Angeles is at Sushi-GEN in Honda Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles. The owner, Toyo, is also the head sushi chef and although he speaks no English his personality still shines through. The quality of the sushi is incredible and the atmosphere is traditional but energetic. I HIGHLY recommend it!"

"Best sushi in all of LA!!! This family owned restauraunt has not only managed to create the best sushi and rolls in town, but they keep their prices absolutely reasonable. The chefs and servers are the nicest people you'll encounter, and the sushi really is to die for. Also if you like gettin creative with rolls, then just sit at the bar, and the chefs will make you anything you order, anyway you like it. Once again...top notch establishment, top notch people, and top notch sushi!!! (10+++)"
