Fax:943-5836
Opened:11 am - 2.30 pm,5 pm - 10 pm
Review:" Convenient downtown location. Large sushi and non-sushi selection. Prices are average for the city. Taste and service are quite good. Presentation is okay. Along with Wasabi on Osborne, they both provide a less formal dining atmosphere. "

Bimi Japanese Restaurant

Address:1893 Grant and Kenaston, Winnipeg

Reviews:"Exceptionally well made sushi! The price is average but the taste and service are exceptional! "
- Martin (plsg01@hotmail.com) [Jan 5th 2004]
"Great place, friendly, good price, great sushi cooks, very, very good sushi. A good choice in town. "
- sushiman (reach-me@gmx.net) [Jan 27th 2004]
"Just had my dinner at Bimi today, last time I went there was in 2004, and after today I will never go back to Bimi for dinning again. I am sorry to say that their sushi ingredients are of poor quality and so the price are relatively high. I don't mind spending good money on quality sushi. But in Bimi not only the sweet shrimp is combined of 2 small shrimps instead of the normal big one, the fatty tuna belly is not belly, it is just normal pink tuna. And, you spend the same amount of money on these poor quality sushi as you would on the way better quality sushi in some other Japanese restaurants. I have eaten sushi in a lot of places and I eat Japanese food at least once every 2 weeks. I really honestly would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Thanks for reading. "

BluFish Japanese Restaurant

Reviews:"Open since January 2006. Went to this new sushi place the other day and the food is excellent. Fish was the freshest I had in the city and the staff were really friendly!! "
- Maryann Peters (maryann_peters@hotmail.com) [March 20th 2006]
"I am always looking for delicious sushi. Tried Blue Fish today and regret to say that is was less than desirable. Ta Ke is my favorite Sushi in the entire City. "
- Rhonda (libertadrhonda@gmail.com) [July 22nd 2007]
"The food was awesome, the atmosphere very cool. Only downside is you will go home smelling like tempura - they need better ventilation."

Opened:Tue-Fri: 11.30am-2pm, 5pm-10pm, Sat,Sun: 5pm-10pm, Mondays closed
Reviews:"Ohno owner and chef very friendly and funny. Excellent value and atmosphere. "
- John (jmacneil@galaxy.mb.ca) [July 30th 1997]
"Mr Ohno is very friendly. Great sushi at very reasonable price. The restaurant is nicely decorated. Service can be a bit slow during busy evening. I still rate the restaurant as the best in Winnipeg. There are very nice "season special" dishes."
- F. Kan
"I have eaten sushi in Paris, Toronto, Cancun, Montreal, Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Cartagena and a few other cities...Edohei's quality ranks right up with the best (read 'superb') and usually exceeds them for quantity, price and quality! "
- Jake Marks (jakemarks@home.com) [June 11th 2001]
"Winnipeg's original sushi bar. The sushi may be somewhat more expensive than others, but is definitely amongst the best and by far the most consistent in the city. Menu is large and varied. Service and presentation standards are quite higher. Many Winnipeg sushi chefs had their start here. The restaurant conistantly appears in 'Where to Eat in Canada' year after year. Need I say more? "
- The Fool [June 18th 2002]
"Great place, great sushi and sashimi, they use very good fish, one of the top in Winnipeg. I like this one the best during my stay in Winnipeg, next to 'Bimi Japanese Restaurant' the best sushi I had for a long time. A must for every sushi lover. Enjoy. [:)] "
- sushiman (reach-me@gmx.net) [Jan 27th 2004]
"Simply the best sushi I have ever had. I live in Vancouver and have visited several restaurants there as well as Winnipeg and other cities, and although there are several very good sushi restaurants out there, this is my favorite. The food is nothing less than excellent. The atmosphere is very good. It is fairly pricey, but definately worth it! "

Ichiban

Name:Ichiban Steak House & Sushi Bar
Address:189 Carlton St., Winnipeg, MB, Canada
Phone:(204) 925-7400
Review:"Ichiban has a much smaller sushi selection, and is more expensive, relative to other Winnipeg sushi bars. On Mondays, there is a limited half price sushi menu which is a good deal, but get there early or you may be out of luck. Taste and presentation is usually good, but falters somewhat on those busy Mondays. "

Kenko

Name:Kenko
Address:788 Corydon Ave., Winnipeg
Phone:275 3656
Review:"Before my fiance brought me to Kenko, I hated sushi. I'd had it before and was completely unimpressed. Now I'm totally hooked. I've been to many sushi places, but Kenko is definitely the best one I've tried to date, especially for rolls. The prices are reasonable and the rolls are a size that will actually fit in your mouth. Staff is excellent. They could use better music, and thats the only criticism I can come up with. "

Masa

Name:Masa
Address:10-2077 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB, Canada
Phone:(204) 261-3131
Reviews:"Greetings fellow lovers of sushi. I will start off with introducing myself, always a good place to start. My name is Marlo and I am thrilled to have happened upon your site. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada smack dab in the middle of the prairies , not the place one would imagine to be a delightful haven of sushi, one of the true culinary gifts. It would be your treat to sample the offerings of the prairies, besides tantalizing offerings of fish we also have some home grown favourites. A favourite of mine can be found at Masa Japanese Restaurant which offers The New Zealand (Althougn it features Manitoba produce) Roll which offers Manitoba Lamb, Red Pepper, and Daikon, another favouite is the Manitoba Roll presenting scrumptious morsels of Manitoba wild boar. Of course a true sushi lover can never pass up a satiny piece of sake, or a delicious, meaty piece of hamachi, all which can be found at various delightful sushi locations here in Winnipeg. "
- Marlo (marlocooley@hotmail.com) [January 21st 2001]
"Small sushi restaurant featuring both traditional and conventional seating serving the university student community. It has a large sushi menu, featuring a good variety of traditional and Manitoba-inspired sushi. Prices are average for Winnipeg. Taste and presentation have always been good during my visits. Service is usually quite good. For the non-sushi eaters in your group, they also offer a daily dinner special. "

Meiji Sushi Japanese Restaurant

Name:Meiji Sushi Japanese Restaurant
Address:454 River Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Phone:(204) 284-3996
Opened:Mon- Sat: 11 am - Midnight
Reviews:" This is the best sushi restaurant in Winnipeg! I have eaten at every sushi restaurant in Winnipeg and restaurants in Vancouver, Toronto, Playa del Carmen. I have never eaten fish so fresh in a sushi restaurant. The consistency of food quality over dozens of visits is unsurpassed. Service is good and the serving staff and owner (Don and his wife) are very friendly. Don apprenticed under Edohei owner Ohno San for 6 years and has worked at Masa as well. "
- Phil Kwon (phil kwon@hotmail.com) [September 17th 2001]
"Meiji Sushi is also a martini bar, and both sides are excellent. Great atmosphere with all-black decor and comfy padded seats. High ceiling and lots of space. Sushi is fresh, delicious, and not too expensive. Very friendly service. Also a good selection of martinis and various cocktails. "
- Pookel (pookel@hotmail.com) [June 26th 2003]
"I have to say that this is one of the better Japanese restaurants in Winnipeg. (been to both locations and the one on Princess St is far more superior food, service and atmosphere wise than the one in Osborne Village. Prices are a little high but I have never been disappointed! Food is delicious and creatively presented. Menu has lots of sushi to choose from, many that you can't get at other sushi places in the city. Too bad that the Princess St location got rid of their martini specials! There should be more sushi places similar to this one that are cheaper!! Hoping that 'the Peg' will follow Vancouver's lead some day. "
- Mia from Vancouver [August 2nd 2004]
"While I agree that Meiji is delicious, I'm afraid I can no longer afford to eat there, as their prices have gone up yet again. I will eat at sushi train on madison. It is the best value/quality for their low price. "

Miso

Name:Miso
Address:667 Stafford Street, Winnipeg
Phone:(204) 452-1166
Review:"The price is okay for all-you-can-eat sushi (15.99 for lunch and 22.99 for dinner-including 4 pieces of sashimi), all items are made to order, although the rolls have more rice than usual. The side items are unlimited as well so you can eat all the tempura you like. There's a fee for left over items to avoid waste. Service can be very bad - I've been there a few times, about half of the time the servers were new, or too bothered. Overall, it's a great place to fill up on sushi when you're hungry. The 'wonton soup' is made with gyoza though, the same thing if you order the pan fried version. "

Phone:(204) 452-1166
Reviews:"Yamato changed its name to Osaka. I have not been there yet. "
- [August 4th 2002]
"Very nice traditional Japanese setting with clever seating accommodations that allow you to sit either Japanese or Western style. Sushi was great, though I only tried it there once. Good service, and prices not too high. "
- Pookel (pookel@hotmail.com) [June 26th 2003]
"Having just sampled the closest equivalent to my lunch dining experience at the former Osaka, I will likely not be going back soon. The sushi was excellent as usual, but the hot dishes in the menu seem to have had their meat portions drastically cut down, bell peppers added, and the prices raised by a third. The few I sampled might have well come from a frozen teriyaki stir fry pack. As I said, I enjoyed the sushi, but it was never what distinguished Osaka in my mind as the best japanese restaurant in town. The rest of the menu is what I went out of my way for, and I can not say the same for this new incarnation. "

Sushi Gozen

Name:Sushi Gozen
Address:St. Vital Mall, Winnipeg
Phone:(204) 254-8247
Reviews:"I am very impressed with this new Japanese restaurant located in St. Vital mall, Winnipeg. Very good authentic Japanese cuisine. They do a wonderful job with their sushi rolls (YUMMY spicy eel roll) and the service was excellent. I am somewhat of a sushi connoisseur as I have lived in Japan previously and sampled sushi in many places around the world and I have to say that Sushi Gozen does a wonderful job of serving up some of the best and most authentic sushi in Canada. Also, try their shrimp and yam tempura, it was wonderfully tasty as well!! Job well done Sushi Gozen!! "
- (traveler.29@hotmail.com) [Dec 8th 2006]
"Sushi Gozen is one of my all time favourite sushi restaurants. I used to go to Masa every weekend with my mom and when they changed ownership I was quite sad but very excited to learn not only that most of the staff were starting up there own restaurants (Teqila: Koya in Grant Park Mall, Yujiro: Yujiro sushi)but also she would be opening up SUSHI GOZEN everything is wonderful the sushi is to die for and the prices are very good. "
- Nikki [May 5th 2008]
"What a big time disappointment. When it opened it was great and I loved their Sushi. Now it's as if they have a surplus on rice and that is all their rolls consist of, no filling and extremely large. Won't be coming here anymore. "

The super friendly owner, Jane, not only serves the regular sushi, she has her own creations every month as well. Try the 'Dragon' or 'Torch'. You might want to know how they look like or taste. Go there and find out yourself. While you're there, check out the grocery store located in the same building, you'll find some unique food and drink imported from Korea and Japan. "

- [May 11th 2001]
"By far, my favourite sushi bar in Winnipeg. The only sushi bar to go to if you're limited for time. The model train goes around the sushi bar, and you can simply pick any of the freshly made items you want right off of one of the train cars. Even if you choose table service, and order off of the menu, service is still very good. Prices are definitely the cheapest in Winnipeg. Taste is very good, but presentation suffers sometimes. Not much for the non-sushi fan to eat here. "
- The Fool [June 18th 2002]
"Eating at the Sushi Train is an experience that you will never forget. The quality and taste of the sushi is an explosion of delight for your tastebuds. I am truely impressed. Along with the friendly service and a very modestly priced menu, you can't go wrong! "
- AE [January 9th 2003]
"The quality of the food (sushi and otherwise) are not consistent. Sometimes their food is fresh, delicious, and the service is decent. But more often than not, their food is either cold (I had soggy AND cold tempura there, twice), dry (the sushi had no taste to it and practically no ingredients inside it), and basically not worth my money. Once, I ordered Assorted Vegetable Tempura and the waitress gave us Vegetable Tempura. When I mentioned it, she said, 'Oh, I heard you wrong,' then walked off. No refunds, no changes, and the tempura was cold and soggy (same one). :/"
- [Aug 30th 2005]
"I've eaten sushi in Winnipeg, Toronto, Calgary, Quebec City, Montreal, Paris, Birmingham, Coventry, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing and Vancouver. I have to say that this Sushi Train ranks up high on my list. The prices are resonable and quite cheap, the fish is fresh and they have combined just the right amount of ingredients for the perfect maki roll. I disagree with the reviewer above me,I've had the tempura many times there and its never, ever been soggy. The only cons of this restaurant is that they do not give very good service like other Japanese restaurant, and they do not have a very wide selection of morsels or meals to choose from and, the fact that they charge extra for more Wasabi isn't a very good business strategy. "

"2861 Restaurant: Sushi Train Adresse: 1295 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, MB R3T2B3 Phone: (204) 452-0892 Fax: (204) 452-0892 Opened: I like to say that Sushi Train is like the McDonald's of sushi resturaunts. It's quick, cheap, satisfying, but not the best quality. I love love LOVE how cheap everything is on the menu but I have had some disgusting experiences there complete with rude service. The avacado rolls at Sushi Train are the BEST I've ever had because they use big chunks. Unless you're on a tight budget, skip the Train, go to Meiji's. "

Sushi Train at the Forks

Name:Sushi Train at the Forks
Address:101-1 Forks Market, Winnipeg
Phone:(204) 943-6300
Reviews:"Have never had a bad piece here, however the service can be another issue entirely. Lunchtime service is generally good, dinner is usually not. Of the 5 times I've been there thus far for dinner, 4 of them I've been poorly served. This can range from never getting a drink refill, missing items clearly ticked on my order sheet, or getting a chance to pay the bill, seriously leading me to consider a dine and dash. Can't complain about the sushi, just go in expecting to wait and wait some more. Patience is, after all, a virtue. "
- [Feb 5th 2007]
"The suggestion that Sushi Train is like the 'McDonalds' of sushi restaurants would be an insult to McDonalds. While a Bigmac isn't good for you, at least it tastes good; cannot say the same about Sushi Train. Visited the Sushi Train at the Forks recently and the rolls were, quite frankly, extraordinarily poor. Given the popularity of the place, I chalked-up my first visit as an off night and visited there again on a Saturday night. While I had thought I hit rock bottom on my first visit, the rolls on the second visit were arguably worse - I just waited much longer to get them. I suppose for decent Winnipeg sushi try Maiji on River. They are not the gold-standard by any means (compared to Vancouver or even Calgary standards) but they are utterly incomparable to Sushi Train."

Reviews:"Tokyo Sushi is a fairly new establishment. I originally went there for a late night snack, as it is new my house, but I have been back several times. The menu is somewhat limited compared to other japanese restauants in Winnipeg, offering only sushi, and a few appertizers. In my opinion, the sushi itself is of high quality, with very fresh fish and other ingredients. I would rate the quality of sushi as lower than that of Edohei, but the equal or superior of most other japanese restaurants in Winnipeg. The staff are all very friendly, and seem to treat regulars well. I often order large platters of sushi for my workplace, and in addition to being offered at a very nice bulk rate, I often find a fair bit extra thrown in. If you're in St. James/Westwood, I would recommend checking out Tokyo Sushi. They are a new business worth supporting. "
- Nicholas [Dec 12th 2005]
"I never tried sushi before so I went there and have some the special roll -Eskimo- it was awesome (it was the roll with smoke salmon on the top). The staffs are all kind and the chef who is the owner of the restaurant. I often get extra rolls when I take out or dine-in. Eventhough he can't speak English very well, he is very kind and friendly. I think this restaurant is the best restaurant that I ever have been. When you have chance to have sushi for lunch or dinner, why don't you go Tokyo Sushi and have some real fresh sushi ? "
- Chris [Feb 11th 2006]
"I been Tokyo Sushi restaurant often, the owner of the Tokyo Sushi is very kind person. He often gave us extra rolls and sometimes if he is not busy, he come around the tables to ask how is the food, but I know he is not good at English, he is trying to conversation with the customers. I found that was nice that the chief is come around the tables. Also, their waitresses are very friendly and nice. One of the special maki in Tokyo Sushi 'Eskimo', I been a lot of Sushi restaurant in Winnipeg, and only the Tokyo Sushi has the 'Eskimo'. The prices are reasonable, and taste good. If anyone chance to go to Portage Ave west side, try Tokyo Sushi. "

Phone:(204) 774-4328
Reviews:"My wife and I went to try this sushi restaurant shortly after it opened (in 2000). We had dinner there and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. It was rather pricey and cost us $85 for a meal that we could get at Meiji for $65. We returned another night to have ice cream and coffee in their lounge. The restaurant was at 20% capacity and their lounge had one couple in there; it probably seats 15 or 20. After being told by the hostess that we could have coffee and ice cream in the lounge, we entered the lounge and were ogled by the bartender and owner as we went to a table. The hostess spoke to the owner and bartender(also a member of the family that owns the restaurant) and returned to tell us that there was a $15 minimum and we couldn't have our dessert there. We will never go back...that is not the way to earn a clientele. "
- Phil Kwon (phil kwon@hotmail.com) [September 17th 2001]
"We enjoyed wonderful sushi at Wasabi on Broadway. Our server was friendly and helpful, and his recommendations were delicious. Especially good were the Tiger Roll and the Volcano Roll. (Prices at Meiji are more reasonable.) "
- Bailey [May 7th 2002]
"Definitely the most formal sushi bar in the city. The $15 per person minimum charge during supper may scare off thriftier diners. Same sushi and service you'll receive at the Osborne location. If atmosphere ranks high on your list, definitely dine at this location. If you're looking to spend less than $15 per person, check out their Osborne Village location instead. "
- The Fool [June 18th 2002]
"I went to Wasabi house one night and, yes, it is a bit pricey and it didn't seem to be up to capacity, but the food was delicious and the staff was wonderful. They had a great variety and I tried black sesame ice cream, something I had never had before. There are two great things in life on Broadway in Winnipeg, that being the massage parlor called Broadways and the other being sushi at Wasabi House. When I want to enjoy life I want a massage parlor and then sushi to go with it. So as far as Wasabi's on Broadway is concerned, it is not about price, it is about location, location, location. "

"Don't listen to the first guy who had the ogling comments. He didn't give it enough of a chance. Wasabi's is probably the best restaurant in Winnipeg. I have been there umpteen times and highly recommend it, not only for great service but great food. The second floor has the traditional sit down into the floor setup and the main floor has 'sit at the counter' sushi. The food has always been impeccable and delicious!!! "

Fax:(204) 474-2292
Opened:11 am - 2 pm, 4.30 pm - midnight
Reviews:" Of the two Wasabi restaurants in the city, Wasabi Sushi Bistro in the Village is my choice. Service is excellent, price is right and the food is fresh and tasty. The menu is packed with a variety of items catering to all who want to try the sushi experience, whether they're reluctant to try the raw stuff, they're vegetarian, or they're actually allergic to fish and seafood (just inform the very accommodating serving staff)! Of all the places in Winnipeg, Wasabi on Osborne is my favourite. "

"One of my favourite sushi restaurants in Winnipeg. Prices are quite reasonable, and the taste and presentation are very good. However, be prepared to wait. On my visits, it has been always been quite busy. On top of this, the table service has been quite poor. For better service, I'd recommend sitting right at the sushi bar itself. "

"The Wasabi grocery store is excellent (and huge! you can buy powdered wasabi by the kilo), but I was unimpressed with the restaurant's sushi. I had an inside-out roll with rice so sticky I could barely handle it. The rice was also too sweet and not quite fresh. I can't vouch for the seafood, though, as I only had vegetable rolls there. Friendly service. "

"The best in town. They have a new vogue bar, and apparently DJs Saturday evenings. "

"Not the best place in town, they could do much better. Sushi is ok. If you look you will find better locations in Winnipeg. sushiman (reach-me@gmx.net) [Jan 27th 2004] ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ This is the sushi place you go for the atmosphere, not the food. Both the rolls and the fish are just not that great compared to other places. Not a fan."

Yujiro Sushi

Name:Yujiro Sushi
Address:Academy Road, Winnipeg
Reviews:"The best and freshest sushi in Winnipeg without doubt! Only a few tables, but the take-out service is excellent, and there's a small one-aisle grocery with all you need to make your own sushi. "
- [February 16th 2003]
"Yujiro Sushi has consistantly some of the best sushi in Winnipeg and excellent prices. You get a miso soup, sunomono salad, 2 rolls and a heap of sashimi for 12 dollars. The only problem with the restaurant is that it has very restricting hours so order early for the great sushi."
- S. Kryger (shkryger@hotmail.com) [August 22nd 2003]
"This is the best sushi bar in the city. I have eaten there many times and I am always pleased. Masa the owner is always pleasant. They also have a good selection of items in their small grocery section. "
- Casey (casyejury@yahoo.com) [Jan 2nd 2004]
"Definately the best sushi in Winnipeg, and excellent sushi overall! Masa is without a doubt Winnipeg's sushi master. I have had sushi in almost every Winnipeg restaurant as well as, Toronto, Montreal, Hong Kong & Taiwan. "

"Best sushi I have had so far in Winnipeg, I have pretty much been to all of the sushi places in Winnipeg alot of times. Have had sushi in Japan, HongKong, Vancouver and US. Yujiro have the most fresh and good quality ingredients in Winnipeg without a doubt, reasonable prices and good portions. Now, I am a regular customer of Yujiro for my sushi night every week, best sushi in Winnipeg!! =) "
