| "I went with my family and the decor was excellent. The sushi chefs were all very friendly
and the washrooms were super clean
Most importantly the food was great! We loved their fresh tuna and unagi and their rolls were
delicious as well. I highly recommend this restaurant. I read the negative comments of another for
Ajisai and I was outraged! I realize that people have different tastes and Ajisai might not have
satisfied that person but it really is a good restaurant and their fish are fresh. I just wanted to make that clear.

| "I was completely satisfied with the service and especially the food at Sushi Bar Ajisai. The charming server recommended the house vegetable roll and the house special roll and it was delicious. The house veg. roll was colorful with roasted red pepper on the outside and asparagus, avocado, and lettuce on the inside with just a touch of mayo. The house special roll must be an original-it had tuna, salmon, crab and avocado and a thin layer of egg on the outside. Man so good.
Clean restaurant and nice staff. See ya there.

| "One of the most creative sushi restaurents in town. The sushi is fresh and thoughfully prepared. (The anonymous nay-sayer here no doubt feels more at home with the plebian delights of Sushi Boy. Perhaps that 'fishy' taste was real fish?) Ajisai is a tonic for those bored by endless variations on the California roll found in so many sushi bars. And my vegetarian wife finds the most eclectic selection anywhere. Good value. Full marks.

| "If you are looking for fresh, authentic sushi with a western flair, this is the place to go. Ajisai is one of the best sushi places in town and I'm not sure why the other reviewer had such bad comments (maybe a jealous competitor). If you have tried their Tuna Tataki, you'll never order any fancy 'pan seared tuna' from anybody else! All Thumbs up.

| "
I have been eating about five times at several Daimasu Restaurants (Vancouver,
Burnaby and Richmond). I am sorry to say that the rice has been too hard and the sushi pieces have
been carelessly prepared. In addition, the service was not well trained. On the other hand it is
inexpensive and will satisfy most people who do not care or know 'real sushi'. Daimasu is one of
very many Chinese-Canadian owned and run Sushi Restaurants in Vancouver, which, of course, does not
necessarily mean that the food and service quality is different from Japanese standards, but in
many cases, including Daimasu, this is the case.

affordable - quite cheap, in fact. I eat sushi regularly and have been to many sushi places (20
perhaps) in Vancouver and North Vancouver, and I keep going back to Gen for the lunch specials
($7-8 for a good bento box) and nigiri/sashimi in the evening. Fish is fresh and consistently
good. Portions are not huge, but I have never left hungry either. No decor to speak of (at least
there are no flourescent lights!) and the menu is not innovative - you'll find the usual suspects
here. Can get extremely busy on weekend nights, even some weekdays nights...have even seen a short
lineup several times. I would recommend Gen if you need a quick fill-me-up or even takeout.

| "Wonderful little restaurant. Don't let the empty tables fool you at dinner time. The food is fantastic and most of their business is from people living in the neighborhood picking up take out. There was a steady flow of people coming and going, yet the seats were empty. The dragon roll and toro were fresh and tasty, but everything was good. One person in our group doesn't like sushi, so instead had a bento box with tempura (not on the menu) and we all agreed that it was excellent. Highly recommend this small neighborhood restaurant on a quiet street.

and after trying other places, we always come back to Go-Go. It's located

storing ready made sushi in their fridge-or at least that is how it tastes. Eveytime I go there for

to deal with the rush of people at lunch time. As a result, I stopped going there. For fresh 'all

Review: | "I found this restaurant on my way back to downtown Vancouver after a pleasant day in Queen Elizabeth park. At first, it seems like just another one of the run of the mill sushi places that there are literally hundreds of in Vancouver. However, I was hungry so I went into this one. They had menus available out front and the prices were reasonable.
Amazing. I ordered a couple maki and a *droll* Squid yaki-udon. The maki were almost too big for the wasabi dish, and when the yaki-udon came, I HEARD it coming. That's right, it was served still sizzling on a skillet. Everything was delicious. The prices are the cheapest I have seen.
One small complaint, the green tea I was given when I was seated was slightly too cold, which by the end of the meal became very cold. And it was never refilled. Even so, everything else was good enough I'm planning on going back.
Reference prices:
Nigiri Sushi (per 1): $0.99 - $1.50
Maki Sushi (6 pieces): 2.00 - 3.50, although they have some extravagant rolls that are higher.
Donburi: $5.25 (except unagi - 7.50)
Yakiudon/soba: $5.50 - $5.95
After being somewhat disappointed by Ginkaku Sushi, I was relieved to find this quiet, quality restaurant with excellent food, decent service (despite the tea thing) and a nice atmosphere. I reccomend it to anyone who (like me) wants good Japanese food but isn't willing to fork their entire paycheck over for a bowl of rice at Tojos.
Bonus: they have some vietnamese stuff on the menu too.

The last time I went which was two weeks ago, the fish was very fresh, the freshest sashimi i have ever had. I wouldn't say that this restaurant is cheap, but the last time I went with my family (6 of us in total), the bill was only $117. We were all stuffed, AND we ordered good food, and I would say that all of us are pretty big eaters. We had hamachi and toro sashimi, lots of sushi, some maki, tempura, shoyu ramen, una-ju, sake, and LOTS of uni, among other things. We ordered this uni appetizer for the first time and when it came it was a bowl about the size of 1 and a half baseballs, filled with uni. There was some cucumber and wasabi garnish, but for the most part it was filled with really fresh uni. And how much did it cost? $5. I was so suprised that so much came for that price. Anyways, t!
his restaurant is awesome. And as far as I know, ownership hasn't changed a bit since the first time I went there. And I've been eating sushi since I was about 5 years old, so i know what fresh is. But if you're looking for a place with outstanding decor, this isn't the place to go (Guu with Garlic or Hapa Izakaya on Robson is). The mood is one of an older japanese restaurant, kind of dim but traditional. (Their ramen is superb too...comparable to Kintaro)

| "Hi!
I would like to submit a review of the 'Robson Sushi' restaurant on Robson Vancouver BC. It has amazing food but the service is so bad that one has to really talk oneself into going there. Once it got so bad that the waiter started arguing with me over what he had served and what I had ordered. He kept insisting the order was right. I protested and to my utter surprise, he said "..this is an all you can eat restaurant!" and so I shouldn't expect any service anyways!! I got up at once in the middle of the meal and offered to pay at the counter. By this time the whole restaurant was looking at the commotion. There was no manager present at the restaurant and I complained to the woman at the counter who was watching the whole scene. The least I expected was that the woman would either refuse to accept payment or at least offer to give me a discount considering the amount of food I had eaten, but she took the payment in full. Not to speak of the embarassment caused to my friend, who too had to leave in the middle of the meal. It left me with a very bitter taste in the mouth (no pun intended) I am from New Delhi, India and have been eating out in Vancouver for the last couple of years. Never have I come across such bad treatment of customers and abject bad manners. It puts me off even now, thinking about it. Undoubtedly it was one of the worst experiences I had in Vancouver. I would like to clarify that the restaurant although Japanese in style and cuisine isn't run by Japanese owners but Chinese.
I would say unless anyone wishes to ruin their meal/appetite/mood, please avoid Robson Sushi. The all you can eat menu only allows an order of six teeny weeny pieces of sashimi...wonder why they call it 'all you can eat'. They should call it 'all you can eat....maybe'
Another place with good decor and decent food but terrible service is Shabusen on Burrard street. They are still tolerable compared to the service at Robson Sushi. The one place I would recommend for decent food and great service is Tanpopo on Denman...near English Bay. Although I must say my last couple of dinners there weren't quite as satisfactory as they used to be. The Sashimi was frozen to the bone...well figuratively and the stuffing in the rolls was scarce.
Once again I would like to express my anger and disgust at the service at Robson Sushi. Avoid it like the plague!! It sure won't see any business from me, my friends and their families.
Please...anyone out there can you recommend a good Japanese joint, preferably in the downtown area and help me restore faith in my dining experience in Vancouver before I leave the place for good!

| "I eat at Shabusen on a weekly basis and don't mind the half hour drive to eat their sushi. All-you-can-eat menu is available, with bbq at each table or hot pot. Prices are reasonable and service is very fast and friendly. Newly renovated with pleasant decor. They are very busy on Friday and Saturday nights, reservations are recommended. I highly recommend this restaurant! A+

| "If you plan on taking a date, don't choose this place because they will not let you have a table if you only have 2 people. They only keep the table for groups because they want to maximize their cash flow which is kind of crappy. 'Real' nice restaurants will not discrimate like that based on ethics.
Go ahead and try book for 2 people on the weekend. They just won't give it to you. They'll tell you 5:30 or 9:00

| "The service and food make Shabusen on Granville my favorite sushi restaurant in Vancouver. It's good quality for the money, and although the smoke from the BBQs would make a sushi purist cringe, the all you can eat lunch is a great deal. There's a good reason why reservations are required.

The sushi and sashimi dishes utilize the freshest local seafoods and the omakase dishes are great for being surprised. For those turned off elsewhere by salmon roe and sea urchin, Shijo boasts great qualities of both as well as for all their ingredients. Their cooked dishes consist of the usual but also some traditional foods making the overall dining experience memorable. Shijo´s dishes don´t come cheap though, their price range is in that of Yoshi and Tojo´s at least $40-60 Canadian ($30-40 US) per person for a full dinner." |

Review: | "A true treasure. If you come to Vancouver, you have to eat here. The team at Wabi Sabi can't seem to take a false step under the leadership of Chef Tak Katayama, and business partner Chantelle Chouinard. The food is awesome -- all the essential aesthetic elements of traditional Japanese cuisine, with a cutting, contemporary edge in taste and presentation. 'Must order' items of the menu include: spicy scallop motoyaki; ginger soy portabello; tuna tataki spinach salad; yakisoba (unbelievably good ? a luxurious version of the dish with scallops and prawns); Hawaiian tuna tartar (a tower of marinated red tuna, mango & avocado stacked on a bed of sushi rice), salmon rice paper wrap; and hamachi yellowtail chinois (thinly sliced yellowtail sashimi garnished with jullian bell peppers, kaiware, beets, and crispy leek, dressed in soy mirin vinaigrette & chili sesame oil), in addition to the traditional nigiri sushi, maki sushi and sashimi. Loads of specials, including outstanding arrays of limited quantity, special sashimi, and (often times) Kobe beef dishes. But don?t even think of leaving without having desert: the green tea crème brule and the black sesame crème brule are an outstanding end to the evening. The service is impeccable, as is the ambience. Time and again guests from all over the world (including food centers of Japan such as Tokyo and Osaka) say that this is simply one of the best restaurants they have ever been to, in terms of food and value ? and then they insist on going back again before flying home. Omakase starts at $50 at the time of writing, and can?t be beat.

| "My friends and I went to Tanpopo on a regular basis -about 3-4 times a week. We stopped going because the food quality began slipping and the waiter staff were completly rude. After quite a few bad experiences we reached our limit when we arrived one night and didn't get a waiter for about 10 mins and then all asking for tea and getting 2 cups for 4 people which one had lipstick. I would recommend that people save their money and go to Manyo in North Vancouver (on 2nd and St. Georges). Tanpopo is not worth it.

| "Located in the upperfloor of an office building you have a spectacular view of the city. Upon entering you are greeted nicely by an old lady in a kimono. The walls are covered with autographed photos of celebrities like Bryan Adams. The food is of high standard, the service tends to be instructive on the negative side (its ok if you don´t know the Japanese cuisine, but annoying if the waiter wants to talk you out of something you really want). They also try to talk you into the set menus (If you are new to the Japanese food, alright, otherwise you better ask for specials or stick to the menu). The menu offers all the goodies from the Japanese kitchen in high quality. Tuna tataki (a huge piece of excellent sliced tuna with grated homemade ginger, green onions and radish) was so good, we ordered it as a starter and dessert. They also offer it either as sliced or cubed. Una-Jiu (eel on rice) is an excellent dish for all you eel lovers. The special beef are thin slices of beef wrapped around tiger prawns and green onions. They offer many different rolls like the B.C.Roll (a salmon skin roll), or the Tojo Maki, which they offer since 1974 (fresh crabmeat, egg, spinach and avocado) or the Anakyu (eel and cucumber roll). Sushi prices range from $1.50 to 3.25 (maguro and toro). For Akami (red tuna) Amaebi and Uni you have to pay daily prices. Their selection of sake is good. The cold one is served in a chilled bamboo cane, which looks nice. The service is good even though they missed an order. At the end of our dinner they tried to get rid of us. Without asking they presented the bill, even though we would have wanted a dessert and were talking to a nice couple at the other table. Tojo´s serves great food but I´d rather go to Yoshi on Denman. The atmosphere is much more relaxed and the food and service are even better." |

| "People come from across North America to
taste Hidekazu Tojo's work. Tojo's is often referred to as the best, and one of the most expensive, Japanese restaurant in the NorthWest. There's another way to look at it: of the handful of 5-star restaurants in the Vancouver area, Tojo's is, by a large margin, the least inexpensive. If you're looking for a superlative experience at table, Tojo's "omakase" is an incredible bargain." |
| - Paul Belserene (paulbel@wimsey.com)[August 7th 2000] |
| "The thing with Tojo's is that you have to be prepared to eat sushi there.
Chef Tojo is an old school sushi chef who is set in a Japanese dicipline that
has been passed through many of his family's generations. He is the chef, and he
will decide what you will eat, you just have to tell him at the start the things
you like and the things you want to try. I recommend you do not go here for some
of your first sushi experiences, rather you need a couple years of eating sushi in
different places before you come here. I went to Tojo's in 1998, after 8 years of sushi
experiences. The decor as mentioned is several celeberty signed plaques. This is the only
sushi place where I have had uni as nigiri sushi, meaning on a bed of rice with NO seaweed
around it! And Tojo told us not to dip it in soy sauce either, just to eat it like that. Amazing!
The Alaskan Black Cod was perfect as well. Abalone and Mirugai so fresh they were moving on top of
the
rice! Definitely a sushi experience here.

| "I believe that the minimum price for Omakase has been raised.
Last time I phoned it was at least $50. Also, in the review by Paul
Belserene it states 'Tojo's is, by a large margin, the least inexpensive.'
This means that Tojo's is, by a large margin, the most expensive
restaurant in Vancouver! This is surely an error.
[March 20th 2001]
I found this place slightly overated. The chef selection menu now starts from $50 to $75 and so on. I tried $75. It was great but out of 5 dish, three were perfect and two were slightly off the mark. Overall, a great experience but expensive.

Tsunami has been my favorite Japanese restaurant for years. My mom used to go there about 10 years ago for lunch every week when she worked in downtown. It's been owned by the same people since opening.
If you are a beginner at sushi this is the place to go.. everything floats in front of you so you get to choose what you wanna try. The dishes range from $1.70 to $3.50 for sushi.
I recommend their spicy tuna rolls- the BEST spicy tuna rolls EVER. They put avacado in it.. so yummy
Salmon Toro roll- you gotta try this.. it has salmon toro (sirloin salmon) with bonito flakes on the outside.
Chicken Teriyaki- The sauce is homemade and not starchy. They use chicken breast not thigh.
Beef Teriyaki- 6oz New York steak with their famous teriyaki sauce
Chicken Karaage- with a dash of lemon this is definatley the BEST chicken karage ever.
Chicken Katsu- breaded and deep fried to a delicious crispy texture. Comes with Japanese Cabbage salad.
The Price of the food is average
the service is excellent
the food is excellent

Yoshi (on W. 4th) has now moved to 689 Denman Street, Vancouver, at the entrance of Stanley Park. The food is fantastic, eating at Yoshi´s first class sushi bar is a must, the sushi bar counter is made out of one solid piece of yellow ceder (what a real sushi counter should be) and the food presentation was fabulous -- beautiful plates, beautiful settings and above all great food. Tastes are based on his years of cooking near Kyoto Japan and accent on the natural tastes of seafood and vegetables. | " THIS IS IT ! Definitely one of the finest Japanese restaurants on this planet. Behind the sushi bar three chefs are preparing the finest Japanese food you can imagine. If you are adventurous and your budget allows it, just tell them to go ahead. They will serve the most creative and inventive sushi and sashimi and other culinary highlights, you would want to live there. Their dishes follow old traditions instead of fancy cuisine. For example a marinated maguro: they take pieces of maguro and marinate them for about 20 minutes in sake, soy sauce and mirin. That was used for conservation in prerefrigerator times. Their daily specials can include basashi (horsemeat sashimi from Calgary, tasting like excellent beef) or kimpira gobo (marinated burdock root), hokke hiraki ( grilled link cod from Japan). Japan being only 10 hours away they try to get many ingredients from Japan hardly seen on any other menu. The sushi is of excellent quality and the portions are generous. They also offer kaiseki menus as a mini-full course dinner or as a full course dinner. Prices range from $35.00 to daily prices, depending on the ingredients. They also have a sakemenu wih sakes hardly found anywhere else in North America (Tokubetsu Jumnai Josen Masukagami, Jumnai Ginjoushu, Junmai Daiginjou Masukagami). They serve their treasures in wonderful glassware which is stowed behind the sushi bar. Cold sake is offered in a flask sitting in a bowl of ice decorated with a fresh flower. For all you sushi lovers out there: get a ticket to Vancouver and get spoiled!" |
