Isakaya

Name:Isakaya
Address:3469 Avenue du Parc, Montreal
Phone:(514) 845-8226
Reviews:"This restaurant advertises itself in 'Montreal Scope' as 'sushi et bistro Japonais'. "
- Doug Schneider (ParadiseMO@aol.com) [May 29th 2001]
"My absolute favourite Japanese restaurant in Montreal, bar none. Yes, I've eaten at all your shi-shi Bishop street restaurants. Isakaya is home. Shige Minagawa (apparently) used to work in a 5-star hotel in Japan, and was also the head chef at Katsura before things went bad and everyone left. So you know the quality is there. As for the freshness of fish, well it's Montreal, so you can't ask for too much (you aren't gonna find Nobu or Tojo's in Montreal). I actually stay away from nigiri sushi in Montreal in general -- the reviewers in this section who talk about 'very fresh sushi' have no idea what they're saying. They have not eaten fresh fish on the coasts of North America or in Japan. So, that said, the best things at Isakaya are their hot foods and their rolls. Don't go for the full entree 7-course dinners though -- they're rarely worth it (this is not unique to Isakaya). On the other hand, the bento box at lunch is great. At dinner, what you want are: yakitori, hamachi kama, chawanmushi, gobo tempura, appetizer shrimp tempura, salmon and avocado salad, agedashi dofu, andy's tempura sushi, any of the rolls, deep fried calamari, and in particular the weekly specials written on a photocopied sheet on the left of the menu and on the chalkboard (for example gourmet sashimi dishes -- it's safe to assume that the fish in these dishes is very fresh). Try something new, and share it with your entire party!!! Don't be a square! If your really brave, you can ask the waitress to explain the secret items on the Japanese menu. I guarantee that if you come here with 4 people and order 'one of everything' on the hot foods menu, and get some sushi afterwards to finish off, you'll love it. On the other hand, if you come here and either (a) order just rolls and nigiri or (b) order some boring entree-for-white-people, you'll probably be disappointed. You don't know what you're missing, and you'll probably never come back. Which is a shame. For the restaurant, and for you, because your life will be incomplete. An absolute feast, without alcohol, is $40 a head, although you can get by on much less if you're not a glutton. [:)] [:)] [:)] 5/5 stars for what it is (not some stupid 'upscale' restaurant, but rather authentic down-to-earth Japanese cuisine). No, I don't work for Isakaya [:)] "

There is a new one that must be on your list. In a very zen decor (amazing), two chefs (one for the sushi and one at the kitchen) prepare you the best sushi and fine Japanese cuisine. The products are very fresh. The owner is a great host. I give them two thumbs up! THE BEST IN MONTREAL!! "

- Suzanne Tanguay (SueTanguay@aol.com) [August 17th 1998]
"Two restaurants and one bar in one building: On the ground floor is Kaizen Sushi Bar and Restaurant. On the Second floor is the Treehouse and The Blue Note Lounge. Kaizen was voted #1 sushi in Montreal in May 2000."
- Doug Schneider (ParadiseMO@aol.com) [May 29th 2001]
"One of the worst meals I've ever had in my life, except for the desert, which was something you'd get from a super fancy french restaurant. Worth it for the desert I suppose. But $60 each for uninspired fusion japanese food that tastes like crap, (of course including unfresh fish), is totally ridiculous. Don't go here if you're looking for real japanese food. Did I mention that the only reason this place makes money is because they have a peak-hour radio spot? Did I mention they'll look down on you if you're not overdressed? Did I mention that they overcharged me on Visa bill ($123 instead of $120, probably because I left a 10% tip)? Did I mention that I've heard of them asking people for bigger tips when they leave 10%? What kind of sleazebag restaurant actually asks people for bigger tips? Certainly not a Japanese one."
- [Jan 27th 2004]
"Best Sushi I've ever had. Period. All good things come with a price but in this case it is well worth it. The hype surrounding this restaurant is legendary, but the experience almost always lives up to that hype. I love the New-Style sashimi, Kobe Gyozas, Oyster Tri-Affeler and Lambas (riceless makis). Kaizen has moved across the street and Treehouse across town, but the ambience and delightfully exquisite culinary masterworks remain unchanged. "

Reviews:"Fully licensed/Sushi/Tatami rooms. Patrons come for the Katsura M´lange - a combo of tempura shrimp and vegetables - as well as for the fried scallops and yakitori, all served in an elegant Japanese setting. The dishes, including the famous chicken or steak teriyaki, are beautifully presented and served by graceful kimono-clad waitresses."
"One of the largest in North America. The oldest Sushi restaurant in Montreal"
- (rns@envision-inc.net) [December 18th 1997]
"I will review every sushi place in Montreal, based on service, decor and food, and post the review on this website.Ratings out of 5 stars, 5 being the best. Katsura is probably the oldest sushi bar in Montreal. What could be more natural than starting with the grand-daddy of them all. Went there for lunch and although decor gives a laid back atmosphere, the service made it feel very stessfull.Decor is all wood, very traditional japanese style of decoration. Waitress could only speak english, unacceptable by Montreal restaurant standards. Not helpful at all in choosing from the menu and her smile was left at the door. Ordered yellow tail, eel, salmon skin cone and the Katsura roll; presentation was OK at best but mostly, fish could have been a lot better.Left a film in mouth, the kind of texture it has when not that fresh.Salmon skin cone was not good at all. Overall, everything in this restaurant feels tired; the food is tired, service doesn't care and decor has been the same for 15 years. But they have customers, so why should they care? 3 stars (out of five). While not as large or opulent as places downtown (such as the Treehouse), this quiet and cosy restaurant/sushi bar features the freshest and most delectable sushi I have every enjoyed. The restaurant is clean and warm, and the service is friendly and excellent. The variety of the menu is vast including lots of sushi à la carte and teryaki and tempura for those who prefer their fish cooked! "Awful...I do not know is it their management has problem or just the managers have bad tempers, I have seen them screaming to the waiters/waitresses. I have been there twice and I just found out that do not eat their 'deep fried' sushis because they are all made by 'expired' fish or those they prepare to throw into garbage. This is really horrible...they deep fry them since the bad smell and taste can be hided. Plus they do not have to 'waste' all the eatable food. "
- Jossie (suaveele@hotmail.com) [May 3rd 2005]
"I've tried many sushi bars in Montreal and I must say, although the ambiance is very nice, Maiko is a definite two thumbs way down. Their fish is not fresh and their top chefs are way too young to know anything. We wanted to order sashimi rolls and the waiter told us not to order it. Their chef's speciality was dry and the host does not know how to speak English, therefore ignored us the entire time. This place is over rated for the quality of the food and service. Never again. "

"We went to Montreal for a long weekend, hoping to try out a number of sushi restaurants in town. The first one we tried was O-Bento, and we kept on going back. The sushi is delightful and the service is friendly. They have some of their own creations - a Rap Roll is made with yummy fried onions, a Pop roll is deep- fried. There is even a dessert maki. The local weekly newspaper, 'Hour', reviewed this restaurant and said 'Don't miss out on it'. "

"Inexpensive; sushi is generally good. Other dishes are inadequate in terms of authenticity. An excellent value, especially for à la carte Sushi. An intimate, 'cute' atmosphere, but nothing fancy. "

"They serve the best sushi in town. But not for lunch. A lot of traditionnal japanese food other than Sushi : katsudon, Edamame, Shabu shabu etc. "

"Yes, they do serve sushi. And they are wonderful! If you want to have lunch there, make sure you book your place. It is crowded. "
- Sacha (nougha@yahoo.fr) [May 26th 2006]
"The food here is excellent, and as my Japanese friends always point out, very authentic as far as Japanese food in Montreal is concerned. However, I have a beef with the waitress (there seems to be only one, as I've been there many many times, and she's the only one who's ever served me). At first she was distant and unfriendly, borderline rude, which I attributed to her being shy. However, the last few times I've been she's been very slow to bring me my food and tea (the people who come in after me usually get to eat and leave before I do), frequently forgets to refill my teapot, and at one point tried to accuse me of not paying for my meal because I was slow to pay the bill (I'd been there many times before and had always paid, so I don't know what her problem was). Unfortunately, my most recent visit was the last straw. The food made me horribly sick and the service was awful. I'm not going to accuse her of anything, but I've been going there more or less once a month for the past year, and I'd never had such a terrible experience as I did two weeks ago. Needless to say, I will not be going back. "

"This restaurant is actually in Laval, 10 minutes north of Montreal and very easy to get to. Being a Laval resident, I discovered this place very soon after it opened. I have been back many times since. The restaurant itself is beautiful, the service is always excellent and the sushi....out of this world. The chefs are very talented, even their presentations are very impressive. The prices are very reasonable. For such a nice restaurant, you would think you would be paying a fortune like at the trendy places downtown.....not the case!! Be sure to give the dragons's eyes a try! "
- Mary (mlyrou@hotmail.com) [February 19th 2002]
"I will review every sushi place in Montreal, based on service, decor and food, and post the review on this website.Ratings out of 5 stars, 5 being the best.Osaka is located On Cure-Labelle Blvd, just south of La Recreatheque.Went there for lunch and ordered eel, mackerel sushi, the spicy tuna and the Dragon's Eyes roll.Service was quick and helpful in choosing the sushis.Decor is nice, with a few good ideas here and there but all this is thrown off balance by the horrible blue neon light the surrounds the room. Now for the food; both sushis were great but the spicy tuna roll wasn't convincing. However, the Dragon's Eyes roll was what made it all worth the trip; the roll is served on a warm beige sauce that tasted like miso (but the chef would not confirm) and the presentation and specially taste of the mix are exceptionnal.Overall, go for the Dragon's Eyes roll but you can find better on the other departments.I give it a well deserved 3.5 (out of 5). Takara

Name:Takara Restaurant Japonais
Address:Les Cours Mont-Royal, 1455 Peel, 4th floor, Montréal, Quebec
Phone:(514) 849-9796
Reviews:"Authentic Japanese decor creates a rich atmosphere for fantastically fresh, beautifully prepared sushi that many call the best in Montreal. Don´t forget to try the delicious ´melt in your mouth´ teriyaki sirloin. The interesting complete dinners offer a wide selection of Takara´s most famous specialities. You may also choose to dine in the traditional tatami room. Prices are reasonable and the downtown location is very convenient."
"I don't really agree with the above reviewer. This place was overpriced for what we got, which was a bunchy of greasy food and not-too-fresh fish. Admittedly fresh sushi is next-to-impossible to find in Montreal (despite what all these other reviewers will tell you), but for $90 for two I expected a lot more. The food just wasn't prepared with Japanese attention to detail. We got three dishes (agenasu, gyuniku sashimi, and isobe age), and all three came with the same dipping sauce (ponzu?). The other sauce was tempura. Straight out of the bottle. Hamachi kama was surprisingly good, but the rest was just sort of sad, like the restaurant was Chinese-run (nothing against Chinese people, but only Japanese people should run a Japanese restaurant). Honestly, save your money and pay Shige Minagawa a visit at Isakaya. The best Japanese food in the city (and thankfully the yuppies haven't taken it over because it's on Parc Avenue). Unless you're one of those people that doesn't really care about their fish or grease too much, in which case you'd probably like it well enough at Takara. Or if you're one of those people that hasn't realized Japanese food is best eaten tapas-style. P.S. Takara has a faux tatami room to boot (you know, with the hole in the floor). "
- [Jan 27th 2004]
"Okay I'm very outrage at this person who wrote such an ugly review and most of what he comment about the service of takara is not true!!!! The reason I ask you the adminstrator to remove this review that posted almost an year when I recently found about this site yesterday..As the owner of this restaurant the review will affect my business so how.. so please find out who this person is and what's the motive behind him to do such an ugly review. Takara doesn't offer the same dipping sauce ponzu for 3 dishes he ordered, and our customers aren't yuppies they're very high class. and our speciality is not just the fish head. One more thing that really fries me is that our food is not greasy and the restaurant is is not CHINESE run business style, although the owner maybe chinese but all the workers he hired is 90% japanese and we offer the true authentic japanese cuisine at its finest!!!! It is not righteous for virtually anyone to post racist comments and distasteful review, this manner is unjust and displicable. "
