Name:Edokko Sushi Bar & Restaurant
Address:50 Red Lion Street, London WC1R 4PF
Phone:(020) 7242-3490
Opened:Open at lunch times only (no weekends)
Reviews:"The sushi is top quality and the prices (set meals) are very reasonable. The upper private seating area is rather small, but the quality of the food and service makes up for this. "
- Stephen Grayston (grayston@shindoryu.org) [July 13th 2002]
"Fantastic place to go. Great food, exceptional quality, one of the best japanese restaurant I've been to - and that is comparing it to those I've been to in Tokyo! The service is brilliant even when the japanese waiters/waitresses don't speak very fluent English. It's always packed with japanese people, and is fun to sit in an authetic japanese decor. If the film 'Karate Kid' is one your childhood favourite, you got to visit this place, as it is the splitting image of Mr. Myagi's place and the sushi chef looks just like Mr.Myagi himself! I love this place, if only it will open on weekend as well! "
- Kabbage [January 5th 2003]

Opened:Mon, Tue, Wed: noon-midnight Thu,Fri: noon-2pm,Sat 7pm-2am,Sun noon-10pm
Reviews:"Sitting pretty in the heart of clubland, Fluid is a bar with an eye on club culture. The decor is modern and industrial, on two floors, providing an intimate atmosphere for the discerning clubber. On the ground floor a mix of sofas and armchairs fight for space with the retro Japanese arcade games, while the intimate basement bar hosts an exciting blend of club nights and multi-media offerings. Open until 2a.m. the drinks list boasts a great Japanese bottled beer selection, envigorating cocktails and a quirky fruit-driven wine list. Fluid is targeted towards the serious drinker. The chefs create fresh hand-made sushi at lunch time and evening with a good choice of vegetarian pieces providing the perfect accompaniment to the “chilled out” atmosphere. "

"Have visited several kaiten sushi restaurantin London, but this is one of the worse sushi I have ever eaten. The restaurant is run by chinese people, they have quite different way of managing a restaurant. No service and presentation of the sushi not to mention the quality. However, it was very crowded when I was there. Have your own visit and see if I was right. "

- Steve Tan ( stevet@dds.nl) [April 13th 2001]
"Second outlet of Itsu.It is noisier and frequented by younger people compared to the original Itsu. The Kaitenrestaurant offers five different plates (White:£1.95, Red:2.50,Black:2.75,Silver: 2.95,Gold:3.45). 'New Style Sashimi', 'Fresh crab with chili dip' and 'Spiced tuna' are excellent. 'Tofu and sweetcorn roll', 'Shiitake and sesame', 'Prawns and green beans', 'Prawns and asian pesto' and 'Coriander-crawfish handroll' are also worth a try. For soups they serve chicken-coconut, chicken-gyoza-spinach, shiitake-quaileggs,organic-salmon-miso. For drinks its also selfservice out of the large refrigerators on one wall (like in a supermarket). For hot sake and tea there is a selfservice station. It certainly is worth going there, though not for traditional sushi, but the nouvelle Japanese inventions (which are constantly changed iver the months). "

Reviews:"This is the newest and most expensive of the kaiten restaurants in London. They mix traditional sushi with some pretty unusual dishes of various kinds. The food is interesting and very good. It is a pleasure to sit by the conveyor belt and watch the plates with exciting food pass you by. The fish is fresh and there unlike most other places in London they only have a few plates on the belt ensuring the food being really fresh. The desserts are various kinds of sorbets, ice creams and fresh fruit. I can recommend this restaurant if you are up for something new and interesting and if you can put up with 20 pounds a head for a meal. However if you are a traditionalist or dislike trendy and pretentious sushi places, t´su is problably not for you."
- Sven Junkergard (sjunkergard@mail.amsinc.com) [January 10th 1999
"T´su changed its name to Itsu because customers had problems with pronouncation. It is the same place and offers an excellent quality of kaiten. It is not classical sushi (though they offer maguro, sake and ebi) but another ´Nouvelle Japanese´ how I would call it. They have four different prices for their plates (white is 2.50 pounds, red is 2.95, black is 3.25, gold is 3.50) Try ´seared salmon sushi with sesame seeds´ for 2.50, have ´beef carpaccio with tsu herb pesto´ for 2.95, then a plain ´tuna sushi´ for 3.25, have an excellent ´seared tuna with ginger mustard sauce´ and finish with a ´mango brandy snap´ for dessert. Don´t forget to count your plates, it is not the cheapest place but worth it (forget the spinach with sesame sauce, too much sauce). "
- THE SUSHI WORLD GUIDE CREW [April 10th 1999]
"Itsu is still excellent. It is not classical sushi (though they offer maguro, sake and ebi) but another ´Nouvelle Japanese´ how I would call it. They have four different prices (which haven't changed for more than a year!) for their plates (White is 2.50 pounds, Red is 2.95, Black is 3.25, Gold is 3.50). Try ´crab avocado sushi´ for 2.50, have ´beef carpaccio with tsu herb pesto´ for 2.95, then a plain ´tuna sushi´ for 3.25, have an excellent ´seared tuna with ginger mustard sauce´ for 3.50 and finish with a ´Pineapple-Coconut or a creme brulee' for dessert. Other dishes worth mentioning are 'Marinated salmon and chives', a nice 'smoked fish roll' and hot dishes like 'Bonito duck broth' or 'Beef and black beans in a mango sauce'. The hot dishes are on little stoves on the kaiten. Behind the counter three chefs are constantly preparing fresh dishes (as well as some dishes are pre-prepared in a different kitchen) and put them on the kaiten. As there is always a constant flow of customers, most dishes hardly make one round. For drinks they offer all sorts of soft drinks as well as beer, sake and a good wine list. Don´t forget to count your plates, it is not the cheapest place but definitely worth it. As they don't take reservations, they give you a beeper and you can wait in the upstairs bar."

Reviews:"Another kaiten (conveyor belt) sushi place. Each dish you take from the belt usually holds two pieces of sushi. The kaiten constantly being overlooked by the chefs to fulfil also special requests. Three prices (1.20,1.80,2.40) are making things easy for the customer. At the end your plates are counted and you pay by the door. Nonsmoking and takeaway service"
" Small kaiten restaurant, but an A+. You have to try their oester, delicious. Quality and assortment are very rich and for good money. It makes any sushi lover smiles.... "

"This place is great. I havent tried many other Japanese joints in London yet but this place has some of the best tempura I have tasted period, and lots of it too (go for a lunch time special). It has better Californian roll than 95% of the restaurants I ate at in San Francisco, although the size of the pieces is smaller, but hey - its cheap enough to order 12 pieces. Go here for lunch, get the tempura special and some roll, and expect to come away with change from £10 and thats after the tip. "

"Nobu is far from being a traditional Japanese restaurant. I would call it ´Nouvelle Japanese´. They do serve sushi but all other items on the menu are very different (though very tasteful) from classical Japanese cuisine. Starters like ´yellowtail with jalapeno and coriander´ or´Yellowtail tartar with caviar´ are really excellent dishes. ´Unagi Donburi´ a classic Japanese dish (eel on a bed of rice) is great. ´Spicy chicken skewer´ tastes more like tandoori (or peruvian, where Mr. Matsuhisa worked for years). The personal is attentive, but only one or two Japanese are working there. The wine list is excellent. It is VERY EXPENSIVE. So beware."

Review:" Opnend in September 2000. We have combined a traditional fish mongers with a sushi bar to generate a new concept. We have seating capacity of only 14. We have an excellent resident Japanese chef, EICO KANO, who has already established a devote following of sushi gourmets. Our resident and guest chefs, including master chefs that have prepared sushi for the Emperor of Japan, have all commented that they have never worked with such fresh fish. Our current record is Turbot, Sea Bass, Mackerel and Brill on the plate within five hours of being caught. We source fresh tuna straight from boats in Perth Western Australia and can have in on the plate within 24 hours. Our chefs only use the best quality rice freshly prepared. The combination is a must for dedicated sushi lovers. Our prices are very reasonable 2 pieces Toro Nigri = £3.00, 2 Pieces Salmon Nigri = £1.50. California Rolls (6 pieces) from £3.00. We do not have a license and we are happy for you to bring your own booze. Minimal corkage. We ha! ve a thriving takeaway business "

"This is the newest and most expensive of the kaiten restaurants in London.

The quality of the fish is good, though the portions are quite tiny. Prices for two pieces vary from 2 pounds - 5 pounds.
